Now that I've tagged every one of these photos with "snapping turtle," I'm no longer sure that's what this is. I now we thought so at the time, but it doesn't look like one in the photos.
That looked like a snapping turtle to me. Growing up we had one that would come around the exact same time every year to lay it's eggs. It went at least 1/2 mile from the pond to lay it's eggs. It got to be a yearly event where all the neighbors and everyone would watch it's journey going to lay it's eggs and then back to the pond. It looked exactly like your turtle. You should have poked it with a stick to see.....lol Snappers are real fast. You would have definately known it.
Maybe not quite ugly enough to be a snapper. Plus, they are extremely aggressive. There was one crossing the road by our house, and it had its head out, snapping at passing cars! They aren't afraid of much.
It does look like a snapper. Someone once put one in my ex-boyfriend's fenced-in backyard and it was the size of a bulldog. And extremely aggressive: it wanted to chase me, and the only reason I got away from it was it was a TURTLE.
They freak me out. They're like crocodiles: little prehistoric relics.
Tonia, I did that the other day while I was running. It was my good deed of the day... :) Not a snapper, though. Besides, those suckers are big enough to cause a wreck if someone hit one.

I just saw a bullfrog in my Hosta garden last week. I wondered where it came from! I'm not anywhere near water, we're so high up.
I have no idea what kind of turtle this is, but it sure seemed to be booking, for a turtle that is.
