I know, I'm supposed to be "pimping" my novel, as Peter Swanson would say, but I'm distracted by these photos I just know you HAVE to see. Not that you shouldn't rush out to buy my novel (Evan's Castle, read all about it at www.tracyfabre.com or in Peter's new inter-voo of moi) (was that too much?) (I'm never sure) (look, just get back to the post already) (you mean share) (oh, shut UP!).
A very cool place to visit in Alabama, very nearly as far south as you can even get in Alabama, is Fort Morgan State Park. Both times I've been there it's been delightfully deserted, and really, even if you lack any interest in war history, it's a fascinating place. If the phrase "Damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead!" means anything to you, it's because of this fort.
In the on-site museum, you can see the original fresnel lenses from the now defunct (but still standing) Middle Bay Lighthouse and Sand Island Lighthouse. I regret to say I don't remember which was which.

But they're both cool.
From there you can walk into the fort itself -- peeking through first if you like!

One of the most visually interesting things about the fort's construction is the multiplicity of arches throughout.

But the views, no matter where you point your camera, are all pretty darn spiffy. (Yes, I'm allowed to use that word. I'm a writer.)

That's the Gulf of Mexico in the blue background above!

Those steps would have been fierce to go up and down; they were extremely steep. Soldiers must have been extremely long-legged.

There was one other visitor that day. If you look closely, he sort of appears to be giving us the thumbs-up.

Okay, maybe it's just me.
Now go buy my book (which has nothing to do with Alabama, war, frogs, arches, summerpics, or Gather).

You live on the 3rd floor, right? How do you lure them up exactly? Long hook?
Cool pics, too, Tracy. It looks like a neat place to visit. Maybe take a picnic.

Susan! Antidisestablishmentarianism!
Ashley -- yeaahhh I'm pretty sure the blue door is not original to the fort. I think it's where they store their landscaping supplies now!
I have a sign near my front door with a frog , it says "Please don't smoke so I don't croak"
