I just checked my junk folder (I was looking for my Walgreen's coupon everyone's talking about) and was very surprised to find an e-mail announcing Judy's Book is back. I haven't visited the site yet, so I probably shouldn't even make any judgements. Has anyone visited the site yet?
The e-mail said the site has been revamped and is now ready to welcome reviewers back. It says something like "no one knows your local places like you." It didn't elaborate on any incentives or the alleged problems that caused JB to turn into a shopping portal instead.
I loved JB the first summer it was up and I met many of you there for the first time. I really had never tried a social networking site until JB. And then came the gift cards. I actually felt like I was contributing to the success of a business. I didn't think the requirements were too much. Then everything just fell apart.
Then, to ad insult to injury, there was Andy Sack's blog, which can be read at http://asack.typepad.com/. I just checked the Web site and there's no mention of the new activity, so I assume Sack is not involved. He said some very bad things about the people who used Judy's Book. I think showing the inside of Judy's Book through a blog was a great idea, but he should have trashed us, the members who created all that activity. Perhaps he should have used his blog to better communicate what he envisioned our role to be instead of just pulling down the site.
Any other comments? Anyone miss Judy's Book? I thought I would, but Gather is much, much better!

Someone mentioned Boomertowne, and the evolution of that site was much like Judy's Book. Great in the beginning and now faltering (and who knows if it will survive). I guess in that sense, Gather is an exemplary website. They have managed their finances much better than many social networking sites and keep trying to improve the site and incentives.
I know I got two or three shirts from them once!
