Sorry everyone for being away so long today. I seem to have caught a cold from my daughter and I'm really feeling crappy today. I'll post another picture and we'll see if that helps. I would have to say that Marianne is the closest. It is a type of water runoff drain. It does have a specific purpose though and the water is not wasted.

DRAIN HOLE FOR A SWIMMING POOL

Oh wow, Jim, that's some pretty awesome information but that's not what it is either. This DOES catch rainwater or snow melt in the grate. The hole is just an access hole for the Forest Service or AZ Game and Fish for maintenance. This is a metal container that stands about 4 or 5 feet tall and Robert is standing on top of it. The water flows from this container, down a hill, and into a concrete trough. This is a wildlife water catchment, or wildlife waterer. These are placed all over the forest to give wildlife a little help in times of drought. Good guesses everyone. I have to give Jim credit for his in-depth investigation. The rain gardens sound really cool.

Wow, Jim, that's impressive and such a great use of rain water. We should be doing that in some of the northern towns of Arizona, since they're limited on how they can use municipal waters. (That's because they've sold rights to those of us in the low desert. Kind of sad, when you think about it. In the desert of Phoenix and Tucson, the majority of property has planted lawns, which take a lot of water for maintenance, where places like Payson are not allowed to plant lawn.) --- Toni, that use of water he's described is quite similar to the use these are for, just one goes to the plant kingdom, the other the animal kingdom. He should get this as a win! I'm just sayin'.................LOL
