What You Need to Attract and Feed your Hummingbirds
A humming bird feeder....preferably one with ledges or feet so they rest while feeding...
1/4th cup of pure cane sugar
1 cup of water
NO FOOD COLORING NEEDED AT ALL..
I have found them to come to my yellow feeder as readily as my red ones...But feeders come in many sizes and colors....The one below is one I especially think pretty

Below is all you need to get them to your house

I usually add a colorful flower lei..I've watched them chase the lei in the breeze
They like a foothold..I guess it's like we like to sit instead of stand while eating....

They will fight over a feeder

And even as the sun is setting

They will feed into the Night

They are so entertaining...try a feeder...
Thank-you for checking out my Photo/Essay for Summerpics
I used a flash, tripod and cannon 30D

My dad didn't think he was having much luck either until I pointed out that the feeder needed to be exactly the right mixture and they don't care much for beet sugar they want the pure cane..when he switched ..they came!
My hubby is the hummer feeder around here. I just enjoy their actics.
Also, planting red tubular flowers helps attract and keep them. They love my red monarda.

Our goal is to help you further your exposure and to support other gather members.
I can see you are also a hummer lover...it is so much fun to watch them..or LOL hear them coming...
Thanks for all the great info Jenn, -- really appreciate it!!
I even wrote hummingbird poetry once. I know, that's lame. And yes, I'm going to inflict it on you. Why? because I can't help myself. I'm an extrovert. :)
Hummingbird
You bright and burning fuse
Spark from the anvil of God
His name barely fits your tongue.
You are a pentecostal fire
Jade arrowhead from the archer of the sun
The angel who hovers crucified in the air
You hum like a power line
A thimble full of clear weather lightning
Your heart beats like quicksilver
The bright chips of your voice say "En Guarde!"
Musketeer, little swordsman, you jouster, you knight
Your tiny steed feeds in pastures of honeysuckle
Ravisher of swooning blossoms
The iris welcomes you to herself
The garden wants you for a groom
You braid the wind and tie knots in the air
Your fierce eye fixed on a green highway
The swiftest path through leaf and vine
You have stolen summer at spear point
Red bandanna around your throat
Carry our hearts to your stronghold of blue
OK. I'm done now.
You know what surprised me about hummingbirds? How hostile, vicious and selfish they are with each other. At least Cali hummmers are. One tough guy will own the feeder. Sit somewhere and watch it so he can chase off any others. Of course while he's chasing one, another will swoop in.
I'm debating when to put up my feeder since im fairly new at feeding them and alway end up putting it up in june :(
I make my own humming bird food same as yours.
I grow bright red tall canas so I have never had to use a feeder.
They also like glads.
I love this photo essay as I love birds and you've done a great job capturing these lovely little hummingbirds - honey birds, as my mama used to call them!
Look at the honey bird on the hot biscuit!
Jenn, thanks for all your lovely comments on each of my pictures...wish you would have moved to SB but looks like you found a great place to live! Salud
This is a wonderful photo essay, Jenn. I marvel at your close-up pix. Seems everyone loves hummingbirds.
my ex and i used to have hummer and other bird feeders and he shot some amazing macros since they would land on his hand....they came too close to my large eyes which freaked me out,so no perchers thus far on my body....
like the first feeder....cheers,gayle

Our martin houses are up, our finch feeders are fully loaded, and the hummingbird feeders go out this weekend.
Wonderful article, didn't catch it last year, so I'm so very glad you reposted.
Great shots, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
