Working under supervision during her high school summer break, Michelle Ah-Seng is one of 22 students who began research programs, the Canwest News Service reported.
Ah-Seng directly dosed brain cells from snails with a concentration of monosodium glutamate equal to what a person might eat in a typical serving. She said it became apparent brain cells didn't fully develop when exposed to MSG.
Her supervisor, neuroscientist Naweed Syed with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the university's faculty of medicine, said the girl has made an "exciting" discovery.
"This is the first unequivocal evidence, to my knowledge, that MSG has direct effect on neuronal ability," Syed said. "The stuff she has done (in six weeks), I would call it equivalent to a master's degree."
Syed said the next step for the high school student is to get the results published in a scientific journal, which will require validation of her findings.
Ah-Seng said she plans to continue doing that evenings and weekends while in Grade 12, the report said.

My mother suffered from migraines and other health issues caused by food additives for years and during the early 70's she was able to determine that is was the MSG as it was becoming a bit more common in the processed foods at the time. When she avoided it she was fine. We are talking violently ill stop the car every 5 feet or dead on the couch for days as her body just wanted it out of her. Then they started calling it "Natural Flavorings" and it started all over again. Natural flavorings today can mean any number of these products but MSG must be labeled as such now unless it is an additive to an additive so you need a desk reference to read the labels. (Or just feed it to my mother and see what happens) During this same time the high fructose corn syrups started flooding the the market full force and some of these contained it too although I don't think many, if any, still do.
The USDA and the FDA have become corporate "lobbyists" for these companies. When the attorney general first talked about going after the big food producers as they did big tobacco there was a sprout of hope. That avenue appears to have been permanently closed now and congress has all but finished burning that bridge so we will have to see how the "food crisis" plays out as to wether it will be visited again in our lifetime. Right now the push is on for the FDA and the USDA to approve a number of genetically modified crops for feeds and human consumption and the imaginary/media created "food crisis" is the way they are getting people to accept them.
It will take our children and people like Ah-Seng to end it by making them illegal as they really have no benefits and the "low cost" propaganda is nothing but a scam. It is low cast to the producers because the US taxpayer subsidizes the production. Unfortunately, like many, she may be swayed in the future as the highest paid positions for what she does is through these companies and those of similar interest. In 2008 the US govt, through the USDA alone, spent $28.5 billion on "food" production and a good portion of that is for these "value added farm products" Many of these products have been made with genetically modified crops long before they were allowed for "human consumption". In re: another article you posted "Bipolar Illness Linked with Abnormal Genes" think about it. Think about the causes and the "cure" both are created by the same biologists/biochemists. Some in the very same buildings.
If you study what is known (and what isn't known) about the heart and brain, their relationship and then in relation to these products you may make a new decision on some of what you may believe about "mental illness" and what some of the studies on bipolar really show. The chicken or the egg question. Genetically modified foods (livestock and crops) cause genetic mutations in the crops around them and in the animals that eat them and humans are no different. In my observations this is why we are seeing humans getting animal diseases and vice versa as well as the new strains of bacterium that is free-living and can use almost anything as a host be it animal or plant.
I read a lot of the articles you post and some touch personal spots so I don't comment as my views are usually very different from many of the others who comment and my comments usually bring the discussions to s screeching halt. I often disagree with even simple things that seem obvious such as the intelligence of Ah-Seng and others like her that would be considered "child prodigies". I don't think they are above average and are quite "normal" but somewhere along the line there is/was an adult who was "above average" and had expressed enough confidence in the child to get them to want to explore something and look outside the box. What if? The one thing that many child musicians (5/6 years old) have in common is that they never asked for an instrument when they were two. They simply didn't know what they were but someone put one in their hands and showed them what it does and how to use it. The saddest part is that many people will not expose their children to things or allow them to explore or question anything. "You need school, college money etc.."
Thanks for the good posts.
Thanks for letting me share my rant. It's a Jungle out there for sure. I came across this and thought you might be interested. She give a good review.
