Tinnitus, which is better known as ringing in the ears, is generally treated based on its cause, hence, it is important for you to know the causes of ear ringing. Tinnitus is not a disease in itself, but is a symptom of underlying medical conditions. Thus, its known causes are generally medical conditions such as anemia, hypertension, atherosclerosis, vitamin B12 deficiency, and head and neck injuries. However, there are four main factors that has led millions of individuals to suffer from the ringing in their ears.
The first main cause is cochlear damage, which is a result of repeated or a sudden exposure to loud noise. Among the causes of ear ringing, exposure to loud noise is the most common. It has been reported that around 90% of the tinnitus sufferers attribute the cause of the unwanted sound to their constant exposure to loud noise. It could be because of the nature of their jobs, or the way they spend their leisure hours. People who work in construction sites and airports, and people who frequently go to concerts and listen to their iPods and MP 3 players at a high volume are often the victims of noise-induced tinnitus.
Another main cause is stress or trauma. What has stress got to do with ringing in the ears? This is basically because of the inability of the hypothalamus and the organs it controls to produce essential chemicals when the hypothalamus is subjected to periods of stress. These chemicals are needed by our body to function normally. This means that if these chemicals are absent, you tend to develop unhealthy conditions, and ringing in the ears is one them.
Then there is the sinus problem or allergy. If you have sinus problems or allergy, you are likely to have tinnitus because of the kind of medications you use. Antibiotics and antihistamines are known to thicken the mucous in the middle ear. This accumulation leads to a pressure build-up. Consequently, ringing in the ears and middle ear infections take place.
The final main cause is Meniere's Disease. It is a chronic inner ear disorder, and it makes you go through periods of vertigo, dizziness, nausea, ear pressure, and of course, tinnitus. Hearing fluctuation and loud tinnitus noises may precede a Meniere's Disease attack.
Now that you have known the main causes of ear ringing, you can now take measures on how to prevent yourself from experiencing the unwanted sound, especially a noise-induced one. Also, your knowledge of the causes will make it less difficult for you to find the right tinnitus treatment.
