Is there a cat toilet train system that really works? Cats are impressive creatures with great instinctual behaviors and they have a great ability to learn and be taught. As kittens they learn to cover their waste and by the time their adopted they usually already have learned to use a litter box. But as we all know, litter boxes can be smelly and a hassle to maintain so someone decided there had to be a better way.
For these people, the idea of teaching their cat to use the toilet can be very appealing. But is teaching a cat to use a toilet reasonable? Is it even possible? Well, it's definitely possible. Some owners of successful toilet trained cats swear by it. But whether toilet-training is reasonable for a cat is a tougher question to answer. If your cat is young, agile, intellectually curious, and has a flexible personality, toilet training might be a good choice for you. But teaching a cat to use the toilet forces him into an unnatural system of elimination. He may be able to learn, but he may have problems, and you should be understanding of his needs.
Some warning signs that toilet training is wrong for your cat are: he is old (6 years is generally considered "senior" for cats); he is physically unable to jump onto the toilet or balance on the seat; he has had elimination problems in the past; he is unwilling or afraid to try new things, or he dislikes the bathroom or toilet. If you lack the patience and the time to spend teaching and cleaning up messes, toilet training may be too difficult for you.
you can make your own training box, but this strategy can backfire. If the training box slips while your cat is using it or can't support your cat's weight, your kitty may develop a fear of your new method and refuse to participate in further training.)
You start by placing the box next to the toilet, on the floor, and allowing your cat to use it as he would normally use a litter box. If your cat dislikes this location, you may have to try gradually moving the box from its old position to the new position by the toilet. Once your cat is comfortable using the training box in the bathroom, you can then place it on the toilet.
You will probably have to remove other boxes from your home or your cat will prefer those and won't learn to use the new training box. When your cat is comfortable using the box on the toilet, you can open a small hole in the middle of the box. (Make sure that whatever litter or absorbent product you use in the box is safe for your toilet.) As your cat adjusts, you can widen the hole until eventually he is eliminating directly into the toilet.
It always important that you don't do any thing that will rush your cat. Give them time to acclimate. You can expect that any cat toilet train system will take many weeks and possibly several months. Be prepared that your kitty may just not be ready for this and you may have to go back to the standard litter box. Don't try to force your cat, it may cause him to not want to use any litter box. Just take it slowly and watch for progress. If your kitty does adjust well to this training, you will be one more cat owner who is now free from dealing with a litter box.
