Today I finally got a closer look at one of the new tenants. He is a mule which is a cross between a horse and a donkey. This fellow is very striking and looks like he will be quite entertaining.
He gave us a good looking over.

He then let out a loud bray which is a very strange noise. I'm not quite sure what he was trying to say as we've not known him long enough to understand the language.

Either way, he soon grew bored and wandered off to rejoin the rest of his herd.

If nothing else it has made life more interesting for the girls to have new neighbors about whom they can gossip.

Roy - the serenade is a little startling.
Thanks Bhawana.
I've recently cataloged several books about donkeys, and it's charming how fond the authors are of these animals. They make me want to find a donkey, just to "meet" one and see how it behaves. From what I read, they are fine companions.
Katrina - Deb says that mules and donkeys sound alike. It was a bit startling the first time I heard this fellow say something.
Thanks d g
Elaine - I'd never seen anything like him before either.
Corina - he certainly does.
flit - world class character, no doubt.
Dannielle - donkeys are not only wonderful companions but they also make exceptional guards - they are fearless and LOUD!
Sue - I've never seen a mule with these markings. Now remember that they are the product of a horse and a donkey so I suppose if the horse had the genes for this (Appaloosa maybe) then this could happen. I don't think there are any donkeys that would pass this along.
I suspect you are correct Layla.
Jennifer - from what I understand they are very hardy and quite intelligent - an excellent choice for that kind of work.
Cute pun there Nana.
Can't wait for more essays on the new neigh....bor!
;-)
Really. I've never seen an animal quite like him. I bet he's got the personality to go with his odd looks.
