It was a beautiful Fall in the mountains of northwest Pennsylvania.
Young Charlie Zimmerman was enjoying the crisp weather and the magnificent array of colored leaves in the peaks and valleys around Plumville.
Near Thanksgiving, Charlie recieved a card from a friend in Dubois, Pennsylvania, about 40 miles away.
The card, printed in Germany, featured a group of deer eating vegetables from the garden. The picture suggests late summer or Autumn.

Address
Master Charlie Zimmerman
Plumville, PA
NOTE: Although the card was mailed in 1909, after the "divided back" for address and message had been approved by the Postal Service, no message accompanies this picture.

Only if it is accompanid by carrots, turnips, and corn.
German deer make sauerkraut in secret woodland cooking spots.
You might be right, Ron.
But, why wouldn't they just write "ysadictoats"?
The deer are vegan.
Kate, you must have the entire census at your fingertips, literally. I would suppose that being a genealogist you would. I haven't done any original research for years. I worked at it rather studiously for about 15 years, looking into my family history and that of my husband, now my ex. Sad thing was, I got as fond of his ancestors as I did my own.
Thre are many of us who are grateful that you practice your swing on Gather, Kate.
Yes, indeed, Wanda.
It is sad to realize that the little boy (nine years old) lost his mother recently.
I always believed that deer would eat any growing plants. I ws surprised to learn about gloves!
I agree with you, Ellie.
I think the sender was someone very close to the boy.
I thought the scene (the large shocks) looked like Autumn.
Plumville is a rural town.
I suppose Charlie liked animals.
This is additional nature lore that i did not know.
So the deer are not strict vegans at all.
Jo, I failed to comment on your observation abut postcard clubs.
While they have existed (and still do) for many years, they were a veritable craze in the early 20th Century.
Millions of postcards were exchanged by postcard enthusiasts.
I recently learned that mysterious initials on an earlier article ("Ideal 12345", e.g.) were notations used to number and prove postcard "points".
I liked this because of the hints of fall. I hate to admit it, but I'm starting to enjoy that season.

The address is very well done, as you note, Ina.
I have always loved Fall, and still do.
If I could only find something lovely in January and February, the entire year would be beautiful.
It looks like there is still quite a bit of produce in the garden, Martin.
Of course, the deer may only be at the beginning of their Thanksgiving feast.
I saw in the news that alligators were invading the backyards and, presumaby, the gardens of flooded areas in Florida.
You don't live near a swamp do you?
Quite true, Kate.
So are we all, Sharon!
:-)
The card is well-made, and in good condition given it's 100 years.
I believe all the alligators are attending the All-Reptile Convention in Sarasota this week.
A sad, but plausible, hypothesis, Martin.
Im sorry I did not come back to find the continued discussion of Kate and alligators.
