I Joined Facebook. What Do I Do Now That I'm There?

I joined facebook, and I need help. What do I do now that I'm there? On gather, we share posts and photos, and get to know each other that way, but what do I do on facebook? How do I make connections, and once I have the connections, what do I do with them?

Xelene, I'm going to keep a close eye on this thread because I also have no idea at all. I was invited to sign up. I did. I've only been back a few times because I feel lost there. I don't know what I'm supposed to do. I'm not sure I want to go back, but I really am curious as to what all the hubbub is over Facebook! LOL

Tina, exactly! I played around with it for several hours last evening, and still don't have a clue. There must be something to it, though. It's supposed to be the number one social networking site.

I was on facebook for about a week. From what i understand you have to get your friends from people you already know from your school or job and have them join to communicate with them. I don't believe you can find new friends like on Gather and My Space.Hope this was helpful.

My experience on Facebook has been that others contacted me about being friends, so I didn't have to seek anybody out, so I couldn't say how one networks. There are groups on Facebook, however, that you can join. I've joined groups there, but for every time I log onto Facebook, I log onto Gather 100 times, so that shows where my preferences lie. Facebook doesn't offer nearly as many ways to network as does Gather and is geared towards a much younger audience.

okay facebook is a site where you have to know the people you chat with and hookup with.its a safer site for kids and people who dont want to put themselves out there.i really only know rudementary stuff but your best bet is to find each other with their search engine.then you can write on each others walls thats what we call pings.when u visit someones page u poke them.its fun and if u want a place for ur kids its fantastis.i keep in touch with family on it.good fortune i hope i helped some.

I appreciate you posting this, though I'm not on FaceBook. I asked my daughters about different sites and what they do and don't do. That's one of the reasons I wound up here on Gather.

I found friends on Facebook, simply because I knew them from other places. Like I was on a Bulletin board, for fans of romance novel authors, and met lots of friends, who looked me up when I joined Facebook. Most of the time now, I get friend requests from people I've never met or heard of, because they have similar friends in common.
Facebook has many neat applications like A green wall, where you can send virtual plants and save rainforests at the same time.
Just surf on there for a while, and you might find all sorts of neat things.

I am on FB, too. Mostly I do send flowers to and from the Green Wall - which helps save the rainforext or the hunger project - which helps feed the hungry. You can post notes or links or videos on FB. It has 90 million members so it can be a good place to promote your work.

Facebook is a little weird and takes some getting used to. I only use it to keep in touch with people I know. It is not as open and inviting as gather and is used mostly by the "younger" crowd. You can def. make your profile page ALL about you with stickers and things of that sort btu it is also more "dangerous" than gather. And honestly, I would never put up a poem or a short story that I wrote on there. If you have any detailed questions, feel free to e-mail me. I'll do my best to answer them.

Actually, I did not join because that site is a site that they can add spamware garbage (so does myspace..and a lot of blogging sites, but, facebook is notorious for that...(a friend of mine totally disagrees because she has this blog space..but, I won't go on that site anyhow!) ALso, facebook was in the news for some other issues..and people were angry and took it out on this company! I have no idea if they ever even fixed their problems!!
Just something that not only my hubby told me, but, many others did as well!

Oh,and I am on myspace...and I am still thinking about leaving the site..but, even if there is a problem with it..I am STILL there! LOL! I kind of like having a place to blog..although, I am also on blogspot.com which I only use once in a while..and then I also have a million other blog spaces that I go to as well! Trust me, I think that I have enough! lol!!

My husband and I just joined FB recently. A large variation of ages and careers on there.
I opened up a feed by mistake so now three of my pieces of work are on there. After reading some of the things you all are saying it may not have been wise. ????????? But if you don't put it out there how will anyone see it? Gather is my favorite over Facebook and I love 6S also. I am on many others, but I like to communicate back and forth with people and get gift cards :)

I tried another place (tbd.com) but that seems even more confusing than facebook.

Facebook is like sharing with just your connections. Most of the time it will be people you knew in college or from work. I had one request from left field (no idea who the person was) which I declined. Facebook seems more personal. It's not quite the social butterfly that Gather is.

Another person that I got a friend request from explained she was in a group I was in on Facebook, that I accepted. I'm still learning though. If Gather people wanted to find me they'd need to identify themselves as one of my Gather connections before I'd accept.

tbd.com is not confusing at all. It's for babyboomers. We discuss babyboomers problems there. It's not for readers and writers though. I am a babyboomer. I love that website. But I am more of a reader then just a babyboomer. That's why I hang out here all the time. Have questions? Write to me.

I keep in touch with friends from school, play games, join groups and YES! Make money using Facebook!!! I love it, I think I'm an addict, lol. I love parking wars and sending things to friends. Very addicting!!!

I am only on Facebook because a Grade School and High School friend asked me to join. I only go there if someone sends me an email about something. My kids and there friends are there so I'm connected to them.

Facebook aficianado here.. and I am definitely on facebook a lot more than I am on gather. (sorry).. because I can zip through it quickly..
1) create your profile
2) put up some photos
3) make friends-- import some friends from your address book
4) make friends by posting on gather.com that you want to be their FB friend too
5) get some of those apps going-- the garden patch.. that saves rainforest.. the super wall, fun wall, pick out some music,
6) join some groups
7-- ping me on facebook -- I will be your friend

I only joined facebook because something I volunteered for had a group there - and it's easy to get nofications of events for it. Then a bunch of my LiveJournal friends added me there, and we leave messages for each other occasionally. The games can be kind of fun, and you can post pictures, but there's not really anything for posting articles or blog entries - which is the main reason I join places like this. I'm not much of a chatter and frankly, I'm not really comfortable with using my real name there.

At least it's free and doesn't charge you like Classmates, where you have to pay just to see who signed your guestbook.

you can add friends by searching for their name or by school you attended. you then can talk to them, message them and add applications to your profile and share other items as well

You can play games on facebook,chat with friends,search for friends,job hunt,look through classified ads post photos and articles,comment on other people's stuff,you can add alot of different applications like growing gifts,family tree,flair,bumper sticker,and photos.
If you want a friend try searching for the name Ashley Skinner on facebook,or I think my url name on there is something liek pianoplayer103006 or pianoplayer1030 or pianoplayer1006,something to that effect.

you can search friends you may know through email address...
you can leave comments on there profile's after they add you as friends,
send private messages. add your favorite movie boxes to your profile. post video's,

If you're looking for network for writers, FB probably isn't the way to go. If you're looking for connections, it should work out ok. I only have a page there to keep track of a couple of friends, and play stupid games. I'm on Gather for serious stuff.

I have a FB account and the most annoying thing about that social networking arena is that many of the 'added features' are NOT FaceBook original applications and require a re-direct. Well I don't know how savvy all of you are about the computer but re-directs are dangerous if not used properly. Launching off a generally secure pad such as facebook, all other re-direct sites within it but not supposted by it like Superwall, FunWall, Green, Karma, Genius tests, etc etc etc make me leary of how much is being 'aired' despite users being told it is all internal. Meaning you only get contacted by those you really might know. Check my FB here

I'm on Facebook and I love it. I got on because most of the people I work with have a facebook account and then so do my brother and my sister-in-law. Since then I have found old co-workers, college friends and church members from back when I lived in Portales, NM. FB is a great way to keep in touch with people. My brother plays fantasy games on it. My friends Gayle and Mary are always challenging me to games of Scrabble. I enjoy looking reading the "Pieces of Flair" and "Bumper Sticker" applications. You can also chat with other friends online. And I post some of the poems and posts that I also post on Gather. Of course, I'm only on Gather for the creative writing challenges and to read then excellent content written by my connections in the forms of poems and stories, not so much for "social networking." That's what I do on FB.

I joined Facebook about 3 months ago, because someone else I know on MySpace invited me there. But, being established on MySpace, I just posted my basic information there. Last week, I was surprised and delighted when a woman I knew in jr. high school contacted me there. I have made just a few other contacts there, too, people who don't use MySpace.

Since discovering Red Gage and Gather, I have backed away from using MySpace, as well.

YOU CAN GO TO YOUR FRIENDS AREA , its up top by home, profile and all that, then invite people you know by using your personal email list , its way different than gather ....tell you the truth I spend most of my time farming , in Farmtown and Farmville . They are games you can play and you can inter act with people you don't know through the games . My advice don't spend any money playing the games and DON"T give out your cell number for any reason ( boy did I learn a lesson there )
