Most often, kittens have come up, but we also toyed with the idea of a dog for the kids to enjoy. Last night, Nick and I had to drive into Lansing to run some errends, and we stopped into PetSmart while we near there.
In all PetSmarts, there is a cat adoption center, run by local shelters, or the humane society, depending on what is in the area of that PetSmart. Our PetSmart has a local rescue foster group that puts cats in, and takes care of them while they are in there, and handles the adoption.
We found 3 kittens we fell in love with. They were each 4 months old, 2 males that were neutered, and 1 female that was spayed. All of them were up to date on shots. However, no one was there last night to do an adoption.
They only have adoption nights twice a week. Luckily, tonight was an adoption night. After talking it over, we debated on 2 or 3, and we wound up deciding to adopt all 3, as long as all 3 were available, and were all right with the kids.
Tonight we went in, all 5 of us, and sat in the adoption room getting to know the kittens. Now, at Petsmart, the set up they have allows the chambers to interconnect, or be shut off from each other. There are 8 small chambers, and 1 really big chamber. They usually only seperate cats that do not do well with other cats. The big chamber was blocked off, which held all 3 of the kittens we were interested in.
The three kittens, "Buttons", "Ricky", and "Teddy" were pulled out, and we were given a chance to get to know them, ask questions about them, and make our decision. We wound up with all 3 kittens.
We have renamed them to "Kirese" (Buttons), "Aliex" (Ricky), and "Rajik" (Teddy). They've been home with us for about 3 hours, and immediatly got lost in our big house. I've never noticed just how many small cubby holes we have in the house that a kitten can hide in!
Along with the kittens, we were given a big pitcher style container to store cat food, a full size can of Oust air freshner, and 3 small packets that each included 2 kitten food samples, a cat food scoop, coupons, a DVD about cat care, coupons for PetSmart, a coupon good for $30 off the first vet visit to 1 specific vet, and a different certificate good for the first well check at a different vet.
The kittens have all shown very different personalities. Rajik (above) is playful, and completely at ease around us. He comes right up to us, plays with us, and snuggles. He has no problem allowing us to pet him, or pick him up.
Aliex (below)is jumpy- he will come up to us, but if we move, he takes off for the nearest hiding spot. He has gotten a bit more comfortable, and has already made our bed his home.

Lastly is Kirese (below), she's the most skitterish, but she was an abandoned kitten when they got her, and she was barely weaned before being abandoned. She has not let us get close to her at all. In fact, when I closed off the back room, where they had been playing, she quickly discovered she could hide under the sofa.

That made us a bit uneasy, because the sofa has 2 recliners, and the kids and Nick use them often. We didn't want Kirese to get hurt under there, but we let her go for tonight. We just didn't use the recliners at all.
Now, about 40 minutes ago, we smelled something bad- yep, Kirese made a mess under the sofa. We moved the sofa, got the kittens out (Raj was back there with her), re-showed Kirese where the litter box was, then cleaned the mess. We also sprayed it down with lysol, and fabreze, then vaccuumed, and I can't smell anything anymore.
We figure with her being such a nervous little thing, that is bound to happen at least once or twice until she gets more comfortable here.
Now, the kittens are off and playing in the dining room, where they have 2 food dishes, and the ability to play without the kids bothering them.
These guys were all born in April, and are close to the same sizes, though Raj is a bit bigger, and Kirese is a bit smaller. They are not siblings.
I am so excited to have these cuties here with us!

they are cute!!
I just spent 10 minutes laying in my bed with Aliex, and he was very affectionate, and all about having me pet him where ever he wanted. He really seems to enjoy having his belly rubbed- he rolled right onto his back anytime my hand strayed towards his sides. :)
Just give the skittish one some time. She will come around soon enough. I always picked the skittish ones up and hold them close. Matter of fact, one tiem I had an apron with a big pocket in the front. I put it on and carried a kitten around. She got used to me at teh same time being able to hide.....Lol..I will never forget her. She was oen of my favorites.
they are adorable.
i want them :]
We actually adopted them from a no-kill rescue shelter. I'm glad we were able to do it that way.
Last night, Aliex slept in bed with me all night- right next to me. Every time I moved him a bit, he would climb right back until he was against my skin. SO CUTE! But, it did mean I was sleeping a lot lighter last night, afraid I'd roll on him.
Rajik came in and slept in bed with us about halfway through the night, and at some point early this morning, Kirese was in bed with us, as well. I woke up, glanced down, and all 3 were snuggled up together!
The kitties are all playing together in the living room now, though Kirese is steering clear of us while she plays- still, it's great to see her out and about and exploring the house!
You are brave trying to train three at the same time!
