We got a small Weber Smokey Joe grill from mycokerewards last year, as we needed something in case of a hurricane. Well, fortunately there were no hurricanes last year, but this year we are prepared. I had never grilled by myself before, so I was a bit nervous, but it turned out to be pretty easy.

My boys are very picky eaters, and they are completely opposite, so I was very curious as to whether or not they would like the pizzas. My oldest son does not like pizza or cheese, and my youngest love both pizza and cheese.
I made a meatsauce to go on the pizzas, and since my husband and kids do not like cooked veggies, when they are visible, I did manage to sneak in some fresh tomatoes, onion, garlic and green pepper pluse some fresh basil, rosemary and oregano.
For Sky Kai (my youngest) I made:
Pizza with meatsauce, sausages and cheese
For Roshane (my oldest) I made:
Pizza with meatsauce, sausages, pepperoni, a green pepper and a grape tomato (no cheese)
For my husband I made:
Pizza with meatsauce, sausages, pepperoni, green pepper, grilled onion, tomato and cheese. I also grilled a couple of extra sausages for him.
For myself I made:
Pizza with tomato sauce, green peppers, tomatoes, grape tomatoes, grilled onion, basil, oregano and cheese.

My youngest son was very excited about the pizzas, while my oldest son was more hesitant; however, it turned out that Sky decided only to eat the crust, while Roshane ate all his pizza and asked for more.

I personally loved, loved, loved my veggie pizza, and the crust was perfect. I brushed a tiny bit of olive oil on the crust, and grilled it a little before I turned it, and put the ingredients on. It was much better than any other homemade pizza I have ever made, and it certainly beat Dominos. It came close to my favorite pizza from a local pizzaria in Botany Village, NJ, but it did not beat it.

My husband was a bit nervous, when I called him to ask where he put the lighter, but when I called to let him know that I had successfully grilled the pizzas he was very relieved. I will admit I was a bit nervous, when the flames where high though, but I picked up my camera, and got a few shots for tangerine week. My husband came home late, but he too enjoyed his pizza...even with the veggies.

I really enjoyed the grilling part, and since I do not like using the oven due to the energy use, I will definitely incorporate grilling into our meals once in a while. In fact, I am grilling homemade hamburgers and hotdogs for dinner tonight with pastasalad.
Have you ever grilled a pizza? If not I can highly recommend it. What are your favorite toppings?

Priscilla, I was really impressed, and since we are in Florida I don't think our homemade pizza's will ever be made in the oven again. I am actually thinking about making extra crusts next time, and just put it in the freezer for those times, when I am too lazy to make the dough....such as today:)
Sandy, you do exactly that. The toppings turned out great. As soon as you turn the crust once, put on the toppings, and cover it, if you have a cover.
Alexis I love mushrooms on my pizza and olives as well, but I was out of both.
EB, it really was great, and as I said this was my first time starting the grill by my self:)
Great photo essay too.
We grill a lot at my house, since it's just too hot to use the oven.
YUMMY!!!!
So, did you make your own dough? Was it raw when you put it on the grill (it looks like it but I wanna be sure)- the recipes I've seen for pizza on the grill call for that precooked store bought crust which I don't like, but your's looks fresh. I could totally dig this!
I've grilled pizza before, but it was a long time ago and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Thanks to you we'll be grilling up a few pies this weekend!
Ang and Moggy, I don't really have any measurements for my dough, but is what I use. warmed water, yeast, add a tspoon of olive oil, 1 egg, and flour until the consistency is right. Let it sit for half an hour and then add some more flour, when you make the pizza crust.
Moggy I put the dough on the grill uncooked, but i did brush it with a tiny bit of olive oil (very little) just to make sure it did not stick. After it had browned a little, I turned it over and added the ingredients. Yummy!!!
Thanks for the timing tips Sue, I was going to ask that too. We have tried the philsbury pizza dough but didn't like it - not on the grill, we baked it but it was too sweet or something for us.
Nice article!
Moggy, I also use some olive oil, when I bake mine in the oven, although I think the oven pizzas are history now:)
LaRue and Ken, thanks for stopping by, you should definitely give it a try...although you might get addicted:)
A tip for making your own pizza in the oven is to par bake the crust a little bit before you top it, bake it just to the point where it is begining to firm up. Then take it out and top it. That will help you to make sure that the rest of the ingredients don't get cooked way before the crust, causing a mushy crust.
