Yes, I've seen them up close going for the hanging flower pots full of flowers. They especially went for the fuchsias. No, I've never had one do that to me before. It must be a case of mistaken identity. My nephew has a baseball cap with bright orange letters. Maybe I could try his. Hum, maybe I just wont. I would be a little nervous. When I lived in NC we had feeders on the front of our house. One day while outside with a visitor, the male hummingbird felt we were too close to the feeders and kept "buzzing" our heads. I thought a bee was attacking me at first! (I am deathly afraid of bees!) When I realized it was the male I just laughed. This particular one was very territorial as we had several feeders on the eaves of our house. He was kept busy defending all the feeders as he didn't want any other males around!
I had one once visiting me because I was wearing a red blouse. I stood stock still and he buzzed me on all sides. The sound was amazing but the rush of being that close to such a delicate beautiful creature was awesom. Glad you had the same kind of thing happen to you.
Awesome! No, never happened to me, but I surely would be immensely tickled and feel quite blessed if one did!! Now, I bet I take to wearing my red blouses and throw on a loud orange cap with it just to see, there are an awful lot of hummingbirds around here!! =D
I might also add that hummingbirds do not migrate in groups. If you have feeders out for them they must be cleaned every week, otherwise, a black residue gets on the feeders, which is a fungus...it will make them very sick and affect their respiratory systems. Wash the feeders with hot soapy water and rinse well. Never clean them with bleach! The suagar water lasts longer if you put the feeders in the shade. one part sugar to four parts water...mix well until sugar disolves. Happy humming.
Oh, they are very loud. We have tons of hummingbirds at our feeders. The feeder is next to the porch, so when I go outside and sit down near the feeder, you can hear them. LOL Sounds like a B-52 coming in for a landing. LMAO But Oh how I love looking at them, they are beautiful.
I was at a friend's cottage last week and they have tons of hummingbirds. One hovered by me to check out my red shirt. I was surprised at how loud they were for such dainty little birds.
YES! I have several humming birds every day visit my feeder. If I'm wearing bright red or orange, they will fly to me and hover. My little hummingbirds seem to be fearless, even with three cats in the yard.
They do that to John all the time because his uniform shirt is red. Yesterday one buzzed around Gizmos head, it was so funny, she just sat there looking back at it like WTH?
Hummingbirds are mighty, even if they are tiny. My regulars have no fear of us, and better yet they chase the mockingbirds clear across the yard! Too funny.
Every day, I am a red head and every time I go out in my yard they fly to my head. The first time it happened to me was years ago, I thought it was a pre-historic wasp by the sound, then I saw what it was. Now I feed them and don't even flinch when I hear one near my ears.
They do make a chirping noise. The humming is from the speed of their wings. I love watching them. They're like miniature helicopters. My eyes followed one the other day to a tree branch, perching there checking everything out. You'd never see them if you were looking for them.
I'll bet it IS loud! We had one that got caught in our garage and was buzzing around by the window...I caught it gently with my hands and released it outside...that was the closest I ever got to one of those beautiful little things...
We don't have hummingbirds :( They are the coolest little things though! I have seen them down in Maryland and up north in Potter County and they are so fun to watch.
No, but I have had one real close to me that was caught in a net my parents had over their fig tree. We were trying to get him out and he was flying so close to my eyes, I thought he was going to poke my eyeball out. (the net was over the fig tree to keep the birds from eating the figs)
Hummingbirds are amazing - at the Desert Museum outside of Tucson (and I'm sure other places as well) you can walk into a humming bird aviary full of many, many species of hummingfirds. So many of them fly within inches of you, curiosuly checking you out!
Oh, I forgot - I have a friend in Nova Scotia - each spring the same hummingbird returns and taps on his study window announcing he or she is back from wherever it migrated during the winter. Then my friend has to rush out to the garden store to get a fuscia in flower for the hummingbird (he has about 7 hanging fuscias already but they aren't yet in flower when the hummingbird arrives). True, believe it or not!
At Bunganut Lake, (in Lyman, Maine, USA) is where I have my summer camp. For the last few years, I have had a trio of hummingbirds regularly visit during the course of the summer. They are certainly fascinating birds. For the first time this year, I actually witnessed the hummingbird sit still on the birdfeeder (as it drank the sugar water). Hopefully, I will be able to capture them on video with my digital camera. --Joe

Their smallness and their big job of pollinatination gives me great respect for them. Not to mention that they are quite pretty.
I guess the noisy flutter of their wings when I'm up close really is par for the course.
