I've been trying to go through once a week and change the images that I have spotlighted. At first I was picking the oldest photos so that they could get some recognition too. Then I was just choosing my favorites. Today I started going through and randomly chose 4 that had less than 40 views.
As far as articles go, it seems like recipes do the best for me. I had my photo essays from my March trip to Maine spotlighted, but they didn't do as well as I'd hoped. My Angel Food Lush Cake recipe has over 100 views. It's stayed put all summer and will stay there until the end of summer picnics. I posted my pretzel pandemonium recipe recently and have spotlighted that as well. It doesn't seem to be doing as well, but I have no photos of that since I haven't made it recently.
Today I posted a recipe for Quick Apple Crisp. I decided to spotlight it because it is also a photo essay showing the finished product. We will see how this one goes. I will probably leave it up there until the fall, once apple picking season is over.
So do you have a method to your madness? =)

I wish ou could spotlight more than 3 articles though. 5 would be better.

I only usually spot light my photo essays and my freebies posts...I need to change the spot light pics, maybe even spotlighting them as I put them in...because...a lot of ppl click your name and get taken to your profile and the spotlighted items is what they choose to click on since it's easiest.
usually if I have something new, but it is getting lots of comments I will not spotlight it yet, and one day I did go back and spotlight a couple of older things that didn't have very many comments yet.
as far as articles go, I don't write too many, or havn't wrote many in awhile anyway, so mostly my newest ones are spotlighted.
