I just finished doing some weeding outside and I am in a world of hurting. Why you ask? Because I have two herniated discs in my neck. Specifically, the two between my c4-c5 and c5 and c6. And the pain is not just limited to my neck, it goes down my back and down my arm. Not to mention that both arms are totally numb most of the day.
Here's some background on my problem. It started about 2 years ago - I kept feeling like I had a really bad kink in my neck. That pain went through several stages, but I eventually went to the doctor when I started to notice a severe weakness in my right arm. I could not open doors, hold a full cup, etc... It turned out that I had one herniated disc and it was impinging one of my nerve roots that traveled down my arm. I had a lesser invasive surgery at the time that only created a more open space in the vertabrae and partially shaved the extruding portion of the herniated disc.
Well, since then, that disc has reherniated and the one above it has also herniated. I have been to 2 different neurosurgeons and both have said that my only option is a fusion. I am avoiding the surgery for 3 reasons: 1. it's a major surgery with major recovery, 2. it will limit the mobility of my neck, and 3. it can cause further herniations above and below the fusion.
I think I've tried everything short of the fusion surgery, but I am still in constant pain.
1. Went to physical therapy, but that just made it worse.
2. Tried many different muscle relaxants. None of them have helped.
3. Regular pain killers do not help because they do not help with nerve pain. The docs have tried me on the newer pain meds that are supposed to help with nerve pain and most have not helped. The one that did provide some relief, I had an allergic reaction to. Just my luck :(
4. I had two epidural blocks. The first one helped for about 2 weeks and the second one didn't help at all.
5. I use heating pads and ice packs.
6. I've tried acupuncture. I had some success with that, but then I got laid off of work and had to stop going because it wasn't in the budget.
So, I'm curious if anyone currently has or has had herniated discs in their cervical spine and how they managed the pain? and if they had the fusion surgery? I'm open to any ideas/suggestions.
