The Turnaround
George Pelecanos
Little, Brown, August 2008
Mystery
On a hot summer afternoon in 1972, three teenagers drove into an unfamiliar neighborhood and six lives were altered forever. Thirty five years later, one survivor of that day reaches out to another, opening a door that could lead to salvation. But another survivor is now out of prison, looking for reparation in any form he can find it. THE TURNAROUND takes us on a journey from the rock-and-soul streets of the '70s to the changing neighborhoods of D.C. today, from the diners and auto garages of the city to the inside of Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital, where wounded men and women have returned to the world in a time of war. A novel of fathers and sons, wives and husbands, loss, victory and violent redemption, THE TURNAROUND is another compelling, highly charged novel from George Pelecanos, "the best crime novelist in America." -Oregonian
The Bible Salesman
Clyde Edgerton
Little, Brown, August 2008
Action/Adventure
Preston Clearwater has been a criminal since stealing two chain saws and 1600 pairs of aviator sunglasses from the Army during the Second World War. Back on the road in post-war North Carolina, a member of a car-theft ring, he picks up hitch-hiking Henry Dampier, an innocent nineteen-year-old Bible salesman. Clearwater immediately recognizes Henry as just the associate he needs--one who will believe Clearwater is working as an F.B.I. spy; one who will drive the cars Clearwater steals as Clearwater follows along in another car at a safe distance. Henry joyfully sees a chance to lead a dual life as Bible salesman and a G-man. During his hilarious and scary adventures we learn of Henry's fundamentalist youth, an upbringing that doesn't prepare him for his new life. As he falls in love and questions his religious training, Henry begins to see he's being used--that the fun and games are over, that he is on his own in a way he never imagined.

The Vagabonds' Bordello
G.P. Marcello
Lulu.com, April 2008
General Fiction
Focusing on what remains untouched and what can't easily change, the fifteen short stories of this book most serve as shortcuts of daily life. At last, there is "The Vagabonds' Bordello". It's the place where everything and everyone comes together, a novella beneath the night sky, where no one is lost or forgotten or haunted anymore. It's the little rebellion of a crew in a city where no one pays attention to them; it might last only one night, but that night is a good one for the ones participating -or at least, that's what their screams are portraying, while a lonely dog watches them with a single word in his mouth. WILFRED: The Devil's Disciple
Edward T. Duranty
Author House, March 2007
Fantasy
Wilfred is born to a prostitute in a shanty town on Lake Red, Minnesota. He is possessed with evil powers and starts using them at a very young age. He is initially taken into the home of Todd and Janice Ingram. Nearing death, the couple leave Wilfred on the doorstep of a convent in the nearby town of Whitefield. He becomes the ward of two Catholic nuns, Sister Agnes and Sister Irene. Wilfred is eventually adopted and becomes part of the Sorenson family. Shortly after the adoption, however, there is a fire in the house. Mr. Sorenson perishes, and Mrs. Sorenson has a nervous breakdown and has to be institutionalized. The local constable finds the baby on the front lawn and takes him into his custody until he can take him to the proper authorities in Duluth. On the road he collides with a milk truck and is killed. The baby is found lying on the road grinning and playing with his wooden toy. The baby is returned to the convent and lives there for the next five years. When another constable in town is murdered, the town citizens cast blame on the evil baby and the two nuns. The three are barely able to escape an unruly mob and make their way to St. James Parish in Duluth. After a short time there Wilfred is sent to an orphanage in Albany, N.Y.
Wilfred lasts one day at the orphanage before he runs away, leaving three other orphans and one Catholic brother dead. Father John Tobin is closing in on the evil child and orders the sheriff to kill him if he is found. A fast-paced and exciting read that plays out the age-old battle of good against evil.
