Annulment

I was married in the Catholic church in 1998.  My ex-husband turned out to be abusive (verbally, then gradually physically).  After 5 years I finally left with the support of my parents.  Luckily, we never had any children.  I knew the Catholic church would not let me marry again, but I really didn't care.  I figured I would just get married in another church when I decided to remarry.  Now I am dating a man that insists on getting married in the Catholic church, so I have started looking into annulment as it can take a large deal of time.  I called and talked to the woman in my area that will assist me.  She gave me a large list of things I have to get including new baptismal certificates for both me and my ex-husband, a marriage certificate, divorce decree, my ex-husbands address, and I am sure something else.   I don't know why they need baptismal certificates if they have the marriage certificate from the church (they were needed to be married in the church).  I am not really sure what else I will have to do.  Has anyone else gone through this?  Any idea on how much time it may take?  Or how much it will cost?

If your church rejects your life, why would you go back to it?

Let you fiance know, and find a church that can accept you as you are.

if you want to get married in the Catholic church they have requirements...i would talk to the priest who will marry you.. it shouldn't cost you anything.. i think i remember having to sign something so my ex could get married in the Catholic church..best of luck and don't let it hamper your happy wedding plans!!

Diana, an annulment does cost something (as did the original wedding), but I'm not sure how much. They won't even consider marriage until the annulment is final.

My husband was raised Catholic, as was my 2nd husband... But I've never married in a church, and know nothing about it. Obviously husband #2 and my husband now are not "devout" Catholics! ;) *HUGS*

Would be easier to change religion. God is God, catholic's don't have a different God. Same with he other religions they don't have a different God. I know they are just worshiping him in different ways, but is still the same God.

Larry, that was my thinking, but he really wants to get married in the church he has gone to since a child. He is really against any other church. I really don't care either way. I feel as long as someone is Christian, then the denomination should make no difference. They all believe in Jesus and the Bible, that is the important thing.

Why in the world you or your future husband want to be a part of a church with these requirements for (re)marriage? Maybe you should question your affiliation rather than the cost of fulfilling these requirements.

Sounds like he is still a child. I REALLY want to take a trip on the space shuttle. We don't always get what we want..... This is a lesson taught to children...where was your boyfriend?

I know nothing about the process that you need to go through to get all of the paperwork together, just wanted to wish you good luck.

Also, a friend of mine had an annulment done through a catholic church in New York City. Her's cost her around $1000 total,(for everything, including new copies of birth certificates and marriage certificates) so I'm assuming it would be far less than that pretty much everywhere else.

I wish I could help. When I got married to my husband. All I had to do was right a letter to the Episcopal Bishop so that we could be married in the church

When my brother got remarried March 1 they were going to do this as well. But found out it was going to be to much and just went to a chapel to get married. It turned out much better and was alot less to do and less stress on everyone. I wish you the best of luck Amanda.

Maybe the annulment process will be a good way for you to get closure. I am sure that is the idea of it. My husband died recently and I have to get marriage certificates, birth and death certificates for that and it is a nightmare - I have no prospect of a new happy marriage ahead as you do. Focus on your new love and opportunities. The annulment process will be a good way for you to see how together you can manage the problems life has and be able to maintain the love and respect that a loving couple show. I have every hope for your future happiness and hope that you get through this quickly - and without too much expense.
