Cool morning air drifts over my bare legs as I sit in my fuzzy pink robe, sipping on black cardamom tea, watching squirrels from my porch. Ella, a white boxer with brown heart-shaped spots, stands guard at the screen door, pointing at the busy bushy tailed animals in front of her. She whimpers, pushes her nose into my thigh, and points again. Here, in this beautifully landscaped front yard, so close to the Capital, the squirrels pay no mind to my attentive canine. The ripening berries on the weeping mulberry tree taste too delicious, and the nectar in the prairie flowers seem to clean their pallet after a few mouths full of such delicacies. I am fascinated to see these common animals plant their round bellies between two high strung springs for legs, carefully sit upright, and with the most delicate digits, take hold of a flower head and bring the center to their mouth and drink, as if taking communion, or discovering a sacred chalice. After moments of losing time, I finally realize I am late for work, and I must kiss my puppy goodbye.
