My wife and I live in an upper middle class part of town, and we work with the teenagers at a local school through Young Life. The summer is always a bit different because you get all of this sweet camp momentum from the camp trip, but then you come home and it's hard to keep in touch with the kids because they are all going on vacations. Their families all have money to burn, and they don't mind throwing around their disposable income, even in this economy.
It's been interesting to hear some of the trips they have gone on so far. Some get to go to Europe and drink in Italy or Spain. Several go to the beach, but their parents are necessarily shopping for discount sun protection swimwear. They can afford to have someone hold and umbrella over them to provide protection from sun instead. By far, the craziest one I've heard of this year was going to a Rodeo camp. You go and apparently learn how to do all kinds of rodeo stuff like riding bulls and even what it's like to be a rodeo clown. My buddy brought back a roping dummy and other stuff to practice on. Hey, whatever floats your boat I guess.
My wife and I don't really have the time to have these kinds of hobbies. Nor do we have the money to spend on these trips. Maybe someday we will, but probably not.
