Star rating system

Well, it leaves a wider scale-- in theory, although few people use it for that purpose

but why have a 1? it doesn't make sense. why not have a 1, 5, and 10? Or a F, C, or A...

Yeah, sometimes rating is just weird. I don't know. I think it's juvenile, especially since so very few people care about ratings and so many people (or rather trolls) take it as an opportunity to low-rate content that doesn't deserve low-ratings.

No offense, but I'm gonna kind of laugh if a troll hits your article. It's eschewing, and it would prove the point even more. -sets up troll bait and waits-

The new stars are a pain....I've still been viewing stuff and leaving comments, but I haven't been bothering with the stars since the change. They don't seem to really mean anything.
But I'll give you a 10 for this one :)

The design of the new rating system has significant weaknesses, including:

i) the 'thumbs up' image being used doesn't match the other icons on the page,

ii) ratings are now hidden which will ultimately lower their use on the site,

iii) returning to content you previously viewed now requires an extra step to verify that you have already rated the content.

...among the technical problems getting it to work or display at all.

I certainly hope that Gather makes some changes in this area fairly soon. As an alternative, I would propose a single 'recommend' button where I can either recommend content to my friends (or specific friend sets), to the entire community, or to the Gather home page. The latter two 'recommendations' would be public and can be viewed on my profile page.

Perhaps there could also be some incentive provided based the number of 'recommendations' content receives.

I don't know about those ideas Kevin. It would seem more applicable to use a +, -, or ?. for ratings, or not even have them at all, if they don't mean anything towards the points. Apparently the only meaning they have, is for the highest ranking of articles or posts...
Yeah, about the previously viewed. There needs to be something done about that as well...Not sure what it would be though...

I found that clicking anywhere will make it go away.

It takes longer waiting for it to rate. I have had difficulty and reported it.

My problem is when I accidentally cursor over another of the tabs and that stays open for a really long time over the stars. I'm not a fan, but I still rate....

Definately, I find that if you hold down as you move the mouse it works much better, but sometimes it is hard to get the box to stay on. I also find that since it is no longer just seen and has to be clicked on that many times I forget to rate.

I have the same problem

I think they need to get rid of it all together....It's just another mucky muck thing, that imparts the way for trolls to come by and show off their dislike of the said article or image

I dont like the way they did the upgrade on the ratings.... I liked the old way better but as to my knowledge I havent had this problem
