The Phelps Sauerkraut Festival began in 1967 with a one-day program. The Phelps Chamber of Commerce started this festival because Phelps was one of the largest producers of sauerkraut in the world. Eventually, a committee made up of members from the community and community organizations took over the various aspects of this festival with the support of the Silver Floss Sauerkraut Company, now the Great Lakes Kraut Company.
Sauerkraut factories within the Village of Phelps:
The Seneca Sauerkraut Factory located at the West end of Main Street was sold to Seneca Foods, Waterloo, NY and the building was demolished December of 1994. The Silver Floss/Empire State Pickling Company located on Eagle Street, Phelps, NY was sold to Curtis-Burns Inc of Rochester September 1, 1965, then sold to Comstock Foods. Canning ended in 1985, but cutting continued in Phelps and eventually went to Shortsville and Gorham.
Even though Phelps no longer has any sauerkraut factories working, they continue to have this festival in conjunction with the American Legion (Auxiliary Unit 457) and Phelps Fire Department and it is now a four-day event, the first full weekend in August.
I had my grandsons for the whole day because their parents were going to a wedding. Here is a picture of them all dressed up and ready to go.

So after the kids took a long nap, we headed out for the festival. Jordyn wanted to go on rides first, so him and JD went on the merry go round. Click here to see the video.

After that, Jordyn went on the train. JD wasn't quite tall enough for that one.

Then it was cake time. They make many chocolate sauerkraut cakes and hand a piece out for free to anyone who wants some. It may sound gross but its really good.
Here is a picture of some of the cakes.

Here is a picture of the Prince and Princess and the runner ups, getting ready to cut the cake and pass it out. Here is a video of the cake being cut.

After we got some cake, we decided to try some of the other food available. Just for fun we gave JD some sauerkraut. He loved it!

Tom's sister-in-law loved the popcorn

My best friend Penny eating something, I think it was the kid's animal crackers. LOL

This has got to be the worst ever picture of me. I had just bit into a hot salt potato that tasted like it had been cooking for 10 hours. It was gross and Tom decided to snap a picture.

And what would a day out be without the threat of rain. Its seems everytime I go out lately, it rains. But this time it didn't. Every once in awhile, you could hear the rumble of thunder off in the distance and it sprinkled a little bit during the fireworks, but thats it. Some of the clouds that we saw were awesome. Here are some of them.

I don't have any pictures of it, but another thing they did at the festival was called cabbage bowling. I do have a video of it and you can see it here.
The night ended with fireworks. You can see that video here.
I hope you enjoyed my pictures.

Sauerkraut is great! It looks like you all had a great time. I never heard of sauerkraut cake. Wow!
We used to make a barrel of saurkraut every fall back on the farm. I have not tasted any saurkraut as good as what my mother made except at a Bavarian restaurant in San Diego a long time ago.
wonderful photos.
