National Sandwich Month 2008 ~ Day Four!
We here at Because of all the Sandwiches There strive to bring you all the most relevant and up to date sandwich news so I plan to tell you about at least one of my favorite sandwiches every day in August. I know, I know. It's a lot, but variety is the spice of life!
Today I share one of my favorites for breakfast:

Ham and Cheese on Rye Bread French Toast
I'm always thinking about sandwiches (I usually eat at least one per day) and as I thought about the classic Monte Cristo, a new bolder sandwich for breaky emerged.
We had some beautiful caraway seeded rye bread and I'm always game for a combination of ham and cheese. We mixed up an egg batter for the French toast leaving out the sugar, cinnamon and vanilla (so it was a savory combo of egg, milk and nutmeg). While the French toast was grilling, we melted Tillamook cheddar cheese slices on a slice of Bavarian ham on a plate in the microwave. When these were all cooked, we carefully slid the ham and cheese onto one slice of French toast, added a smear of Dijon mustard and a grind of pepper, topped it with another slice of the French toast and then waited until it was cool enough to cut in half.
I wanted to see if this could be reasonably eaten by hand, so gave it a little more cooling time, which allowed the cheese to stick it all together and then dove in! The nutmeg in the French toast really added to the flavor and I pronounced it my new favorite for breakfast.

Dorine - yup! The Monte Cristo is delicious and a lot of work :)
I must get some more sliced ham to make this. Not sure if I would have for breakfast or for lunch... Decision Decisions!
We didn't eat them at breakfast, though. It was usually served as a light evening meal on a Sunday.
I like your combination of ingredients. Ours were just plain cheddar and sweet ham dipped in the egg batter....nothing else, but I can still remember how wonderful they were.....
