Senator Obama just concluded a major speech in Lansing, Michigan where he addressed our current energy crisis and described our addiction to foreign oil as "central" to all of the major challenges facing us today.
Without a doubt, this addiction is one of the most dangerous and urgent threats this nation has ever faced - from the gas prices that are wiping out your paychecks and straining businesses to the jobs that are disappearing from this state; from the instability and terror bred in the Middle East to the rising oceans and record drought and spreading famine that could engulf our planet.
In response to these challenges, Obama announced his New Energy for America plan, which includes an immediate energy rebate to Americans struggling with high gas prices, the creation of five million new green jobs, and the elimination of our dependence on Middle Eastern oil in ten years.
In his speech, Senator Obama outlined a number of short terms goals to lower gas prices and help working families struggling to make ends meet, but he also emphasized that:
We simply cannot pretend, as Senator McCain does, that we can drill our way out of this problem. We need a much bolder and much bigger set of solutions. We have to make a serious, nationwide commitment to developing new sources of energy and we have to do it right away.

Oh, so it's Michigan fault that we have high gas prices! Brilliant!
Doyle, if you had done your homework, you would know that the Obama's have been enjoying a lot of income from books they've written and yes, they are trying to be elitist even though their roots may not reflect that. So, it comes down to just being arrogant. Since they have their money, millions I might add, they want young women not to work for their careers in law, or big business, but to go into social work instead for a lot less money. That's pure arrogance and elitist thinking.
Any sentient American understands that Michigan is the center of American auto making since the Model T. Michigan has suffered tremedously from Bush engineered oil spike. The rest of the nation IS going the way of Michigan BECAUSE of Republican leadership. The local Dems are merely trying, yet again, to clean up after Bush era failure.
Barbra your comments are barely cohernant.
Only three years?
"They're in terrible shape and they have democrat leadership."
The governor is Democrat but the legislature is Republican. And had the Republicans put up someone better than the head of Amway as a candidate in 2006 they might have won that too and we still wouldn't be any better off.
All I can say is I'm glad we haven't always had your 19th Century view of the world or else there would be no assistance for the elderly, the sick, the poor or the unemployed and we'd all be working 16 hour days for $.30/hour just like back in your utopian world where Big Business handled everything so marvelously.
Perhaps Obama needs to find some one else to speak for him here on gather if the current "poster" is unable to stand the heat.

For the naysayers and those still stuck on the stump, I guarantee that in time, in due time, you will understand what's best for humans, individually and collectively.
And no, it's not Socialism that bequeaths such a wealth of progress; it is humanism, in which I am a proponent - a mainstay from the "High Renaissance."
