Let's start by saying that I am the only person in my family that did not win a blue ribbon. My kids each won one. My mother and sister won two each.
I entered two photos that I happen to like but quickly found out I have no business entering photos in the fair. The competion is stiff. There was row after row just like this one. I think there were more photos in the fair than everything else combined.

Here is the photo of my old orange tabby that I entered:

And here is a photo of Lexie that I especially like:

My mother had talked me into entering some writing. I got some editing help right here on Gather and will publish the story on Gather in the next few days. I wanted to wait until the fair was over.
There was quite a bit of writing entered. That's mine in the top row right above Eric. I got second place in the category I entered. Thanks to my Gather Writing Coaches friend set.

I foolishly entered the black walnut baking contests. Somehow we only got one photo of my cookies and it's blurry. They didn't win anyway. The blue ribbon in this photo is not on my cookies.

I have no idea what this cake tasted like but it managed to get a third place ribbon. I don't think it's likely to edible when I pick it up tomorrow since it's been there since July 23rd. It's a Rocky Road cake.

That's all for me and it was quite enough.

Yes, thank you.
I failed to mention in this post that I burned up my mixer making that cake. And then I had to make cookies for my grandfather Friday night with nothing but elbow grease for mixing.
I needs me that Kitchen Aid.
I don't think I'd use the word fun to describe the experience. It was a frantically hectic period when we were getting all this stuff ready to turn in.
I do like to see the kids participate and do well.
The cake looks good, but I would probably eat cardboard if you called it Rocky Road.
I dropped my photos off today, I have a case of the nervous and won't sleep tonight because judging is tomorrow.
So are you now going to enter every year? You had to have had a little bit of fun with this :)
I can't wait to read your entry. Your kids will always remember you doing this with them.
glad you got thru it and you have some great pics to share.
Next year I will win because I will enter something I know I am good at and not something I've never done before like the black walnut contest.
Heck, let's really live dangerously and make divinity.
But isn't humidity the number one divinity killer? This is Missouri.
Can you also count these "lessons" for your homeschooling?
I could if I remembered to log it. I guess I ought to go back and log it, huh?
If she read any of my rants about making the cakes, she'd know what was so funny. I threw away more cakes that week than I usually make in a year.
We don't get comments or even know who judged them. We just show up and see if there are any ribbons on anything once the fair opens. The stuff has to be turned in several days before the fair opens.
I particularly like the Lexie photo but I think it's because it captures some of her personality which we have gotten to know through your stories. The judges probably didn't get all that... : (
