The return of the infamous journalist Trisha DuTell. The following is a fictitious interview conducted by a fictious journalist Trisha DuTell. Trisha aims to interview as many of the characters in No Sensible People as she can get to talk. Maybe I can talk her into reading the book. :)
Trisha: Hi girls, I'm glad you agreed to talk to me today.
Amber: Hey, anyone who can get us out of math is a friend of ours.
Skye: Totally. Fourth grade math. Long division. No fun.
Trisha: Tell me about when you first met Jennie Halifax.
Skye: Well, Jennie's an odd duck, that's for sure. She started at St. Ignatius just before Halloween.
Amber: She got kicked out of class her first day because she talked back to the teacher.
Skye: The teacher totally had it coming.
Amber: Totally.
Trisha: Really? What did the teacher do?
Amber: She called Jennie by the wrong name.
Trisha: Well, sometimes it can be hard to pronounce someone's name.
Amber: It wasn't like that. Besides, Jennie's name is easy.
Skye: But Jennie isn't her real name.
Trisha: It's not?
Skye: It's Mary Jeanette
Amber: But NEVER call her that.
Skye: Totally. That's what set her off against the teacher.
Trisha: Why'd she get so mad?
Amber: Jennie's mama was the only one who called her that.
Skye: You know she died, right?
Trisha: In the wheat field. In a fire.
Amber: Totally freaky, and sad too, of course. You can't blame Jennie for not wanting to think about it.
Skye: We found her at lunch after she's been sent to see the priest. We were totally impressed that she stood up for herself like that.
Amber: Seriously, that was way cool.
Trisha: What do you think Jennie's favorite thing in the world is?
Amber: Probably drawing stuff. Or God.
Skye: God. Totally God. I mean, this is a catholic school , and we study all the religious stuff, and that's cool. But Jennie thinks about God all the time.
Trisha: How do you think Jennie got so religious?
Amber: Her parents were really into it, I think, especially her mama. Jennie is always weighing what she should do, whether the "Good Lord" would think it's a good idea or not.
Skye: She almost didn't go to the Halloween lock in where we all stay over night at the school and play games and stuff. We talked her into it, but she came as "An Angel of the Lord."
Amber: Like Skye says, Jennie's an odd duck. But she's from a farm out in Leifton, MN. The middle of nowhere. Whatcha gonna do?
Trisha: How did she come to live in Minneapolis again?
Amber: She moved in with her Aunt Lucy and Uncle Frank after her parents died. Her aunt is a dancer and a dance teacher and the whole basement of their house is a big dance floor.
Skye: It's totally cool. Her aunt's all hip and stuff. She'll come down and crank the music and dance with us. Her Uncle Frank works a lot, but Jennie likes him. He's an artist like her.
Trisha: Besides her parents, what's the one thing from Leifton that Jennie misses the most?
Skye: Taffy, her Daddy's friend.
Amber: His real name is Denny, but he used to bring Jennie taffy so that's what she calls him.
Trisha: Well, girls, you have been very helpful. I think I'll let you get back to class now. You have a good day!
