While flipping through the channels early this morning, I came across one of my absolute favorite movies ever. This is one of the great things about having 300 channels on your TV. Even though, probably 80% of the time, there's not a dang thing on worth watching, you sometimes happen upon an old favorite. Sort of like finding buried treasure. Today, that old favorite, for me, was "The Story of Us", a 1999 release directed by Rob Reiner , starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Bruce Willis as a couple with two kids, at the end of a 15-year marriage. They've grown apart, and changed, and finally decided to separate. Through flashbacks, we get to see the story of their relationship, from the happy beginning, up to the bitter end, and then their present day situation as they try to decide what to do, and how to break the news of their separation and impending divorce to their kids, who have no idea. Anyone who has ever gone through hard times in their marriage, I'm sure can relate to this movie.
THE STORY OF US MOVIE TRAILERBen Jordan (Bruce Willis) is a comedy writer, who falls in love with Katie (Michelle Pfeiffer) , a crossword puzzle creator who works with him. They get married, have kids, and over time..well, life happens...and the relationship falls apart. The movie is not really the best movie ever written, but I love it, and though I love Bruce and Michelle both, they don't have really amazing chemistry. I mean, there's chemistry there, don't get me wrong, but it's not blaringly obvious all the time. But I think that lack of intense spark actually works for this movie. This movie is not about attraction and falling in love, it's about what happens after the spark has kinda fizzled..and the magic has all but died. It's about real life and real love and real relationships. Sometimes, it ain't about the fireworks! There are some real laugh out loud funny moments here, but what else would you expect with a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Rob Reiner, Rita Wilson, and Paul Reiser. I've read the reviews of this movie on Amazon.com, and some people complained that the constant flashbacks made the movie seem choppy and it was hard to really get engaged in the characters, but I disagree. I think that Rob Reiner does a pretty good job of involving us in their story. We get to see how they began, how they became an "us" and started a family, the good times, the bad times, the fighting and the loving, the "highs and lows", and how things came to be so bad that saving the marriage seems hopeless enough for them to give up.
The Story of Us is a chick flick, no doubt about that, so if that's generally not your cup of tea, maybe this movie wouldn't be one you'd put on top of your must-see list, but for those of you, like me, who really love a good chick flick, this is a really good one! The final scene of this movie is the one that really does it for me. Michelle Pfeiffer's speech does come off a little whiny and sorta comical, where some would rather it have been more dramaitic and serious, but that fits in with the rest of the movie. It's killer, and even though I've seen this movie about 50 times, I still bawl like a baby every time I watch the ending. If this were meant to be a real movie review, I wouldn't include this YouTube clip, because it's the end of the movie, and I wouldn't want to spoil it. But since this is just me sharing a recommendation of a movie I love, and it is almost 10 years old (can't believe it's been that long!!), I'm going to put this clip here, and you can see, the best scene in the whole movie. If you don't like spoilers, then just don't watch it, and go rent the movie. Maybe, one of the absolute best chick flick scenes ever.
At first, I thought it was sort of a simplistic ending. After all their problems, and everything they go through, to have it just be resolved like that.. but then I thought, life is like that sometimes. Sometimes it just takes realizing what you're about to lose to make everything else fall into place, and the little stuff not seem so important.
Rachel: You were our Fred and Ethel Mertz!
Katie: Funny, we thought you were OUR Fred and Ethel Mertz.
Stan: Love is just lust in disguise, and lust fades, so you damn well better be with someone who can stand you.

Rachel: Marriage is the Jack Kevorkian of romance.

Lillian: Oh Dot, put out once in a while, your face won't be so tight.

Ben: We don't have a pea under our mattress. You know what we have?
[shouts] A fucking watermelon!
Kate: Once you establish *anything* truly intimate with another person - even *talking* - it has to affect the person you're supposed to be the most intimate with.
