As I sat and watched the news
Tonight, my melancholy sank deep inside
To the very depths of my heart and soul
Where it has come to reside
They are out there hurting and killing
And even the innocents have died
It won't ever reach those hearts of stone
Though I am sure many have tried
So my heart wonders back
To an old favorite song of mine
It was sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary
Long ago and forgotten by time
"How many", they asked each and every soul
Who listened to the words they sung
"How many deaths till we finally know"
That we reached too many at one
Too many began, several ages ago
Long before world wars and high crime
For they are killing soldiers and the innocent too
With bombs, tanks, and IED mines.
And for those that must remain
With young cheeks tear-stained
Facing a world of the ugliest of truths
Since their innocence was not allowed to remain
What will it take for Mankind to see
That death is not what God would have done
That all that we needed to truly be free
Is to learn to listen to His voice alone
Now, my friends, we pray with regret
For another generation that failed
To pass forbidden fruit, they eat of it
While decrying the innocent wails

I hope it does Vinay credit, since I am certainly not in that catagory.
I think that is what i like best about some poetry, and i consider it a compliment that you can. Blessings.
I have read your words so often, I am glad that mine could touch you. Thank you
Thank you Elsie for your heart-warming compliment.
Better than the original by Peter, Paul and Mary's lyrics, the new version for this day and time.
You are really a very good poet Lisa and I am happy whenever you let me know that you have written something new as I know that I will always enjoy it!
Peace be with you!
Esther- You are very kind. It has been an unusual stretch for me these last few weeks. I feel like God is making up for a long silence in my writing, a silence that was almost too much for me.
Terry- Thank you, I appreciate your comments.
When will they ever learn?"
May love and peace prevail.
