Fed Up With Avast - What's A Good FREE AV?

I love Avast, really I do... or at least I DID. HOWEVER, I HATE, HATE, HATE this new version! The On-access scanner constantly scans the pc all hours of the day from the time you turn it on until the time you turn it off.

Sure, this is a nice safety feature, but is it REALLY needed? No, you cannot STOP it without turning off the ENTIRE AV protection. The scanning is LAGGING the PC unbelivably. It also stops messenger from connecting, so I have to STOP the scanning, then connect to messenger, then start again.

I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE! I don't like AVG, but something tells me it has to be better than this is now.

I can't barely navigate Gather as it's so slow that it's just frustrating. Feels like I'm on dial up most of the time... and I have CABLE with increased speed. Sure doesn't feel like it now, though.

Any suggestions?

I am not familiar with this program, so unfortunately I can't help you. I'm sure you will get some great advice from some of the techies on here, though.

I am having no trouble with Avast at all. It updated to a new version the other day. I don't notice any differences, but I do have a very fast PC with a lot of memory available.

Hmm my pc is brand new (a couple months old) with 2gb memory. I do see that GATHER is slower than every other site I try, so part of it might be gather as well.
