Back view of spider.

Front View of spider, -- I could not get a good picture of the front since he was so close
to the fern.

Back view again...once I overed my "shock" and began to inspect this little guy,- I was so amazed at the portion of his web (directly on top of and below him) at how it was so much "thicker and whiter " then the remainder of the web!
I grew up on a farm and have lived in the country my entire life, -- have seen lots of spiders but I do not remember having seen one with these colors, the size nor a web like this........he is approximately three (3) inches long! If any of my knowledgeable gather friends know what type of spider he is I would love to know!!

Thanks all for your comments, so much appreciate each of them.

Does any one know if he is a 'deadly' spider??? (It was about to be the death of me whether he is or not)!!!!!!!
Beautiful.
Thanks Vicky, -- this is truly an honor...I so much appreciate this!!
Like almost all other spiders, Argiope are harmless to humans. Like most garden spiders they eat insects, and they are capable of consuming prey up to 200% of their size. A. savigny was even reported to occasionally feed on the small bat Rhynchonycteris naso[3]. They might bite if grabbed, but other than for defense they have no interest in biting humans. Their venom is not regarded as a serious medical problem for humans, although they often contain a library of polyamine toxins with potential as therapeutic medicinal agents.[4] Among these, the notable Argiotoxin ArgTX-636 (A. lobata).
These spiders are what schools use in the classroom, since they are easy to keep and can't cross water (and no, I don't remember why). You just put them on a wooden frame and they build the web through it.
Donna - thanks for the great info but I still think this spider is harmful to humans....almost gave me a heart attack!!! LOL That is very interesting they can eat up to 200% of their size, -- I could not believe the size of IT!!
Jax - thanks so very much, -- I knew you would have some info for me!!!! How did you know 'he' was a 'she'?!?!? Did you see 'something' in the pictures that revealed this 'tidbit'???? LOL How does the female differ in looks from the male??
The only ones you have to be careful of are the recluse spiders that hide out. Their bite can cause a nasty wound.
Thanks for sharing the pics!
He is not my friend either.
I would have probably screamed and ran off!

I love watching them build their amazing webs, I love watching them tend their large egg sacs...
And I definately love that they build their webs near my back door every year---they catch lots of millers and mosquitoes that flock to the light on the back porch and the light that comes out through the storm door.
I'm sorry she scared you Phyllis but she is beautiful.
She certainly is an amazing looking spider, -- I just could not get over the web!!
Tina - that is funny, --- your hubby sounds a lot like mine, --- I will start for the backdoor for 'whatever' reason and hubby will yell out "have you got your camera?" LOL
but my reaction from both reading what you wrote
AND looking at the pictures is . . . .
EEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee
