This is the house next door. It's one of 26 houses that my grandpa owned. My mom was born and lived in the lower apartment on the right of the picture until she was 3 years old. It was then that my grandpa had completed the house that we are all currently living in. That was in 1949.
As a child, my grandma (my dad's mom), lived in the apartment on the lower left of the picture. What a fun time it was to have both set of grandparents living next door to each other! We always had great family times!
When I was in 6th grade my grandma moved down the street in to another apartment house owned by my grandpa. Leaving the apartment open, he didn't rent it out again right away. I had my first boy/girl party in the apartment when I was in 6th grade. I have to say it was a nice party too. Considering how shy I was growing up, several of my classmates showed up for the party. The theme was the 50's and I got all my ideas and games out of a children's party book.
My grandpa passed away in 1979 and all but 4 of the 26 houses he owned was sold in his estate. This house was one sold, and I believe for some crazy price of only $12,000. The man that bought it fixed it up very little and did leave it as an apartment house.
In 1983 as a young married woman (only 16 years old) I lived in the apartment upstairs to the left of the picture. Owned by the man still that had bought it in my grandpas estate. My grandma (on mom's side) was still alive and living in the house we are currently in, and my parents lived in the house next door on the other side. One big happy family other than the abuse I was enduring from my husband, but that is a whole other story.
Since then the house was sold to a family and turned into a one family home. They lived there several years and did quite a bit of remodeling. The current family bought it from that family and have lived there 8 years now. They have continued to remodel it into what it is today. The paint on the outside that you see in the picture was only completed a couple of months ago.
It's sad now that we couldn't have kept that house. Hind sight is 20/20 as they say. Grandma (on my mom's side) passed away in 1991 just after my daughter Heather was born. At that time my mom and dad bought my uncles half of this house. I then moved in to the house on the other side. Mom and dad had lived there 12 years, and I in turned lived there another 12 years. Now it's been 13 years since my dad passed away and mom has kept this house.
We are doing our best to keep this house and get it fixed back up. It means a lot to us since my grandpa built it!!
