My friend, Lyn, who has been homeless for a few months called me yesterday from West Virginia. She's been living in a tent up in the hills, hiding in the forest. Her parents died in a car accident four or five years ago and left no will so the battle between the siblings over the land has been going on since. The house sits empty and locked up. The brother who put himself in charge doesn't want anyone living in it, especially his sister. He wants it available in case he decides to have a party or some such nonsense.
Initially, I was glad to hear she had a place, even if it's just a tent. She's an experienced camper and it was away from the city. The dogs could run and there is plenty to eat as far as berries and cheap local produce. As long as her brothers didn't see her site, she was safe from the violence that the homeless often are confronted with.
She's been staying in touch with an email here and there or a phone call. I learned she was surrounded by natural beauty and bounty and bears. Then she told me she was hearing a big cat at night, prowling for deer and such. The dogs had enough sense to stay quiet when they heard it though. She moved her site and got out of its way.
Last night's call was very sad news. While picking wild berries for breakfast, one of her dogs was bitten in the muzzel by a rattlesnake. He took the hit that may have been meant for her, she feels. She was just about to call a cousin to tell her to bring the kids and join her for berry picking when it happened.
She got the dog into her van and made it to town where people helped her to find a vet. The doctor agreed to see the dog in exchange for the last of her cash up front. She couldn't say no, as the dog is a dear member of her family. He's stuck by her despite the poverty and craziness that's been her life in the past couple of years. It's a lot more than she can say for her family of her own species.
When she called, she was in tears, not over being penniless again, but over the uncertanty that her boy is going to survive. People there told her she was crazy to spend the last of her resources trying to save a dog. A few offered to shoot him for her. I can actually understand spending the last dime to save this dog.
Today I'm waiting on a message from her to see if Teddy made it through the night. He's a young dog and healthy so he had a chance. His survival would boost her morale. She's lost so much in the past few years.
Now I've got to wonder where a person without a home is safe. What's worse? Facing the cruelty of your fellow human or the unpredictable ways of nature? She's a bad storm or a snake bite away from being killed in the woods, but what's the alternative? Being beaten, robbed, or raped in the city? Poverty doesn't give many positive choices.

no matter where she is on the planet, both Nature and Humanity can stumble across her at any moment. that rattlesnake coul easily be switched out, for instance, with a band of young and spiteful hunters.
the end-result could've been the same (an injured or near-dead canine).
or worse.
safety, in short, is the illusion we present to keep ourselves from Totally Freaking Out. if we stopped and acknowledged the fact that no tornado can be efficiently anticipated (not by locale OR strength), everything about our lives on this planet would fall into place.
ponder:
in a ridiculously awesome fluke of Political Hemhaw, all governments unite in the year 2009 to stop pollution. green prevails; air and water improve astronomically.
i used that last word for a reason. -please read on:
an asteroid ploughs through the Earth, "Deep Impact"-style.
what was accomplished? -more importantly: what CAN be accomplished that can't be undone in one brutal instant?
no, MJ; we must settle for two facts.
1) Nowhere Is Truly Safe.
2) "Trying (to be safe)" is going to have to do.
i think this is because i see her situation as one that could befall any one of us...and i am in that number, of course...
By the way he has no more legal right to the home then she does. All she has to do say that she wantshe portion and they have to seell the home or the bother has to buy out her portion.
So, bravo for submitting this article!
Blessings
This is a horrible story. I am so sad to hear about her situation.
I hope she finds some true comfort soon. And, that her brother has a change of heart.
prayers said for your friend
I pray her situation improves soon.
#2. She needs to move into a shelter for the homeless, where she can obtain advice, for her particular situation.
#3. She needs to get the law involved on her behalf. She has every right and legal ability to moe into that house, and she doesn't need her brothers pemission. Family only gets away with this kind of crap when it is only kept, in the family, and no outsiders know what's going on.
I hope her dog is alright.
Man is the most cruel of all animals.
Families are the number 1 reason for full mental institutions.
I had an Aunt who drained my Grandmothers accounts of $1,000,000. , stealing my families share of the inheritance before she even passed away!
I am just thankful that I am not such a miserable loser who could do such a thing.
Her brother sounds like a real loser.
She should contact an Attorney.
Or has she?
Hope all turns out ok.
I will pray that she gets through this.
I really appreciate you posting these articles because you are giving the homeless a face and a name. Most people are able to walk past homeless people because they think of them as invisible or just objects, not people with a life and a story. I hope things turn our well and will be keeping her in my thoughts.
