Erik (Josh Hartnett) is a seperated sports writer who wants to make it to the next level in his career. He meets a homeless man who goes by the name Champ (Samuel L. Jackson) and claims to have once been a famous boxer that is said to have died year ago. Seeing it as his chance to finally write something that will get him noticed and to prove himself worthy to his son, he starts writing an article on Champ's fall to homelessness.
Jackson's movements and voice transform him from his typical strong male character to a fragile and aging man. He becomes the role. Champ is fleshed out to be more than just a bum on the street. Jackson brings the characters fears, dreams, and lonelinesses to the screen.
The story ties together perfectly, whether or not if follows the true story closely. It starts with two characters who are both in need of something, both have a lesson to be learned, and both receive something they have been seeking throughout the entire film. The movie's ending is satisfying in relation to the entire character developement.
