Pings - everything I know and understand about pings.

     I noticed that some people do not allow pings to their profile. I started asking myself questions. Do people know what pings are? Do I understand what they are? What are they - pings? Why would I want to ping somebody? What happens when I ping?

 

I opened Merriam-Webster online dictionary. Here is the definition: a sharp sound like that of a striking bullet. Not quite so, Merriam -Webster dictionary, I disagree. I do not hear anything when somebody pings me 

Yesterday I had a problem at work. I needed to logon to one of the computers that I work with. I tried to do it, but the computer did not let me in. And I decided... that's right, to ping it. To "ping" means to send a signal of a contact and receive the answer - verify connection. I tried to verify a connection with a computer that is in a network. The little report that I received gave me various parameters: the "roundtrip time" in milliseconds, the address of the computer I  tried to verify the connection with, plus some other things.

I do not want to sound too "geeky". All I am trying to do is to make sure that people understand  -  "pings" on Gather are very friendly.

Ping - is a friendly attempt to connect with another person.

thank you, but I have my pings turned "off".
By the time I see them, they've been there for awhile and I feel they're too old to respond to.

Please, do as you wish. On Gather you don't have to respond to a ping in milliseconds, lol.

I think people object to pings because Google indexes them, but I figure our whole lives are out there for everyone to see, anyway. What's a little ping between friends?

Pat, Google indexes everything that appears on Gather, thanks to Gather ratings. Gather is very highly-rated, therefore everybody who writes on Gather gets special treatment from Google. This brings me to another point - security. I already wrote about it. We have to watch what we reveal. Birthdate - used by crooks to steal our personal profiles, to break into our accounts. Any other information is stored and can be revealed to employers, that dig 'personal digital dirt'.

Pings help me at work , as a command on iSeries computer. On social websites they help to be friendly. I love them. Thank you for the comments.

Pings are also what the sonar does on a ship. It reflects, or pings, off the other obsticle, whether its a ship or a sunken treasure

Renee, in real world pings verify network connections. When we have a network of several computers, we want to send information from one computer to another. These computers have to communicate: to send information and to accept it. Ping is a signal that verifies the connection within a network of computers and pulls the parameters. Here, at Gather and other websites pings are used to connect people. You left me a ping - a message and I will send you an invitation and we will become friends and will talk to each other.
