Last night at the opportunity to go to the Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D movie with my son. I was pretty excited to watch the movie since I am a big fan of 3-D movies and watch them in the theater whenever I can.The first thing that I noticed when I purchased my tickets was that the ticket price was higher than a regular movie. I would assume the reasoning behind this was to cover the costs of the 3-D glasses that they give you just before you enter the theater.
When I did receive my 3-D glasses, I noticed that they were not the traditional blue and red glasses that usually get when you go to a 3-D movie. As I found out later, the reasoning behind this is that the movie was filmed in Real 3-D, a new 3-D movie technology that surpasses the quality of the old-style 3-D movies. The biggest change that you'll notice is that you will leave the theater without a headache unlike the red and blue-based 3-D movies.
Unlike the previous 3-D movies that I had watched such as Spy Kids 3-D, Shark Boy and Lava Girl and many others, we were instructed to put on her 3-D glasses at the start of the movie and we didn't have to take them off at any time during it.
The 3-D effects and we were spectacular with many of them coming so far out of the screen that it was like you could touch the scene before you. I watch my son try and grab an antennae from a bug because it seemed to be right in front of our eyes. It was perhaps the most amazing 3-D movie (in terms of effects) that I've ever seen.
As for the story and the acting in the movie it was okay but it was nowhere near an award-winning performance. In some respects that was expected since it is more geared towards children than adults.
Needless to say I would have to recommend that you go watch this movie at the theater as the 3-D effects are what really makes the movie. According to what I've read at the Real 3-D website, it doesn't sound like the 3-D version of the movie will be available at home so if you want to get the full experience you need to go to the movie theater.
