I didn't know about money market accounts until I helped my mom change banks to the bank I go to. When she signed up, she asked for a savings account. They said, "You know, you COULD be earning more interest with a money market account." We looked it over, and we decided on the money market account- it's been earning some pretty good interest... completely worth it.

CD's are running a bit higher too and you only have to have a minimum of $500 most of the time.

plus once you put the money in there are fees to take it out before it matures. I recommend signing up at a ingdirect.com - they have high rates than my banks CDs. If there is a min to open it's normally very small say $25?! And the money isn't easy to access like an ATM card so no impulse buys. However if you need to money your can normally have it in a couple days.
