A friend of mine (Ian B., geographer70, nice guy; go get him) asked me how I'd managed to get published (next month: my novel Evan's Castle, via Stonegarden.net Publishing, buy now!).
I dunno. Luck. I followed Peter Joseph Swanson over there and hung around until the publisher took me on, probably just to get rid of me!
But here's my more cynical version of the process, as I wrote to Ian:
Summary of How To Get Published
1) write a manuscript of any caliber: fantastic to craptacular. (In theory the quality should matter, but if you look at books put out today by the big publishing houses, it obviously doesn't matter that much.)
2) write a cover letter to an agent which, in one page, brilliantly sums up your manuscript as well as your life (emphasizing why you are even permitted to write), strokes the agent's ego, and incidentally also cures cancer, reduces gasoline prices, washes the agent's car, possibly gives the agent a car, and in a truly ideal world, also slips the agent a hundred bucks while simultaneously naming famous people (not necessarily authors) who can recommend you and your work. (Catch-22: you have to know famous people who can recommend you and your work.) Be succinct.
3) repeat Step 2 five billion times and then give up
4) hope that a small publisher will take you on without an agent, and accept that you might sell very few copies simply because very small publishers generally have no advertising budget
5) if that fails, self-publish, and accept the stigma that goes with it, even though you might very well be a darned good writer (and yes, many darned good writers are forced to self-publish).
Most mainstream publishing houses don't accept unagented work. But it seems to me that you can't get an agent unless you really don't need one.
So... did that help 'splain the process?
I'm lucky to have found Stonegarden.net through Peter. I wish all you other writers the same kind of luck!

I also found Stone Garden by mistake. I had this huge book from the library of publishers, and Stone Garden wasn't in it. But somehow I was looking up web sites, and I started googeling any ole thing and there it was.
I had already tried 3 million other publishers and didn't want to leave them out. Stone Garden got back to me right away . The boss said HOLLYWOOD SINNERS really grabbed him. The rest is small publisher history.
(I never could figure agents out - yeah, you can't get one unless you don't need one)
No whinning, gasping or glurking allowed.
Seems like I missed the boat, signing up for Gather the week before it turned into Facebook. Woe is I.
When will we see your novel?
Agents seem to be like loans, you can only get one when you don't need one.
Ann, she can't change her icon, she has to give us time to get used to this one.
As for Peter... I'm a few months older and I knew him when he was a skinny 18-year old (instead of a skinny 45-year old) so surely that makes me a touch more regal even if I *am* following in his footseps... no? Heh.
I happen to belong to a fan website, where I have become friends with two famous romance authors. Shall I drop their names over at the publishing place? It might just work, huh?
As a matter of fact, I keep in contact with two other romance authors also through Myspace and facebook.
Am I lucky or what? Thanks for the advice, I might just use it.
Seriously though... it does seem to be hard to get an agent's attention, and I have reached the point where, if I knew anyone famous, I WOULD use that info in a query letter.
I am buying some freakin' cheese popcorn before I go to work tomorrow.
As for your article, sure seems like the truth.
LOL.
Good advice here, done humorously. Thanks!
I found a link to your first chapter by accident while on another site ... LOVED it, LOVED it, LOVED it.
So seriously, I'm buying your book right now!
Now PLEASE send the publishing gods some hints that I too want to be published one day
Happy Friday :o)
I will someday publish, but not for a starched collar or an artsy fartsy publication. I have my standards. I go inside instead of use the drive thru at White Castles.
I may need this advise...or your more serious version, after November.
:-)
Great article, girl.
