That's a neat picture. I didn't know there was a tram.

Peter,
The tram was built years after the bridge from LI City and years after the trolley stop on the Queensboro bridge was discontinued.

There is a island in the middle of the East River -used long ago for a sanitarium.
Large housing development was done in the middle of the 20th Century
A great place to take young visitors to the city.

Mitch is right. I changed the earlier comment to delete the ahistorical references.
It doesn't fall in the water, Wilma, but it did become famously stuck more than a year ago.
Riders were rescued after hours in the stalled Tram, and the service was discontinued for months until the system could be repaired.
It is a very fun ride, Audrey.
The crossing does not take long, but the views of Manhattan, especially looking down the east side of the city, are spectacular.

What a great vantage point from which to see the city. Where can I hop on?

At the foot of the Queensboro Bridge (59th Street Bridge, per Simon & Garfunkle).
TramPlaza is located at 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan. On the island a red minibus meets the tram and takes you throughout the island for 25 cents!

Martin, if you ever get to New York, you'll have to try it.
I will take you there myself, because I love to ride the thing and my niece and nephews are no longer interested in doing so.

Gorgeous. Only drawback the traffic tie-up around there is always horrific.
Did you ever see Nighthawks (1981), Billy Dee Williams & Sylvester Stallone? There's a scary tram scene. Terrorists Take Hostages! Daring Rescue Above the East River! Dramatic Police Action!

I did not see it, Arlene. But I may go look it up.
I love the Tram, never felt unsafe up there.

It is one of the little-known treasures of the East Side.
