Boatman, How far?
Like a distant dream, the boat alight with
its dim lamps quivering by the winds of
mid river, is threading a golden hem by the bank. “How far?”
“How far will you go, boatman?” His thin sounds
never return. He thinks of the glitters
of the silver scales of the fisherman’s
catches. The warm white fleshes. Frozen eyes.
The shuffling night is upon the water.
The boy runs by the river bank, follows
the boat. The eternity of distance
black is spread over the earth and the heaven.
The child’s dream to become a fisherman
echoes the call, “ how far will you go, man?”

I like this poem, the idea of looking out, looking forward. How far will we go, indeed.
