Homeschool or public school?

I was just wondering about homeschool, i know my son has asked a couple of times for it but i think its more so because he thinks he wouldnt have to get up so early and thinks it would be alot easier.

Just looking for other poeples opinions on homeschooling or public school...

Homeschooling is a lot of work for the person doing the teaching. Most areas have testing requirements to insure the kids are learning at an acceptable rate as well. I have seen it done very successfully, but make sure the child is enrolled in social activities that keep them involved with people their own age as well. There are groups for homeschooling families to join as well.

I've home schooled since 1998 and love it. He is right in that you don't HAVE to get up so early LOL My grandson is in public school, his father says he needs the socialization and won't allow me to home school him. Let me tell you how much it sucked to have to crawl out of bed last year, get Allen up, ready and to school all before daylight!!
I would suggest checking your state laws on home schools as well as finding a local group to participate with.

The school system here is horrid... so I may have to homeschool. I would prefer my daughter go to school, but not to the local hell hole.

It's a personal decision. Alot depends on what state you live in, how the schools are where you live, etc. I homeschooled my youngest son because he had trouble in school and did much better one-on-one. There are no laws ruling homeschooling here in NJ, so it's easy. Well, it's not easy, but you don't have to do testing.

Tough call...they both have their positves and negatives. A few of the positive things is that it makes the day a little easier...don't have to wake everyone up, see them off, etc., I think kids might be able to learn a little easier in the home environment. Negative is definately the social impact of not being around others their own age in an environment outside the home.

I think Publis schools are best because childrn need to get out and see the world, meet others, interact with others.

I thought about homeschooling my daughter, but as an only child she needed the socialization plus the fact that we do have a good school system here.
When my kids whined about wanting to be homeschooled like a friend of theirs, the friend's father told them this-
If you are homeschooled you are "in school" 24 hours, 7 days a week. There is no spring break, no time off for summer.

I did not have the resources to homeschool. It takes at least one parent being home and community contacts with other homeschooling parents so kids can socialize. It can be done successfully, but it is a lot of work for parents and students.

wow, thank you everyone for your responses....i think he is going to goto public school. i think the socialization is a very important part of his life and dont want him to miss out on that.

It really depends on the parent, and the child. Sometimes if there are special needs homeschooling can benifit the child. I believe in socialization though, if the schools are good where you live I see no reason to Homeschool unless this is something you really want to do. I know a lot of people home school because they don't have faith in their public schools, and that is fine. We are lucky we live in an area where the schools are a high priority.

My daughter homeschooled her eldest back in Kindergarten. She said that it was alot of work on her part. And that was just for kindergarten.

I think that it's a very personal decision. We're already thinking about doing it for our son because our school system blows chunks. He's very outgoing socially, and we've done a lot to make friends in the neighborhood as well as getting him involved in activities that he would be able to participate in outside of school.

It takes a lot of work and commitment, but I think that it can be done well by conscientious parents. We're also making sure he gets exposed to different lifestyles and people so that he doesn't "grow up in a bubble".
