Yup, it's that time again! We had Tropical Storm Cristobal pass by offshore overnight, so the surf was up some and the guys hit the water off Ruggles Ave., the best surfing spot in Rhode Island. Many of you have seen my other surfing pictures, so a word: these waves aren't as spectaclur as you've seen from my camera. As I've said before, Newport's best surfing season is Winter. But it
was a tropical storm, so the waves were good enough to keep you on your toes. And without further ado, here are Newport's premier surfers!
By the way, the guy with the purple and yellow edged board is named Adrian. I was talking to his roommate while we were watching the "show". Adrian was the wild man out there today. As I said earlier, the waves weren't as impressive as what we get in Winter, but Adrian was throwing himself into it and getting the best out of what was available - chasing after waves, hotdogging on them, doing whatever he could to get the most out of every wave he caught. Definitely the star of the day's show!

But Ina, body surfing in Lake Erie can be awesome when things get kinda of wild.
JR, the Newport Department of Parks and Recreation actually has 3 "surfing camps" for kids every Summer running out of Easton's Beach. We start 'em young here, too!
Ina and Sharon, I've been told they actually do get some kind of surf on Lake Superior (they have dunes on the shores, too), but I have my doubts about surfing on it. Boogieboarding, maybe. But then you can boogieboard on Lake Erie, too. Then again, my buddy Marty actually stands on his board and paddles it with this big long paddle, the way the old Maori used to do. Now THAT you could do on Lake Erie!
And now, I'm homesick for the East Coast, again... *sigh* Oh, well. I'm glad you posted this.
PS: Also, anybody else notice how slick the photos are at the bottom? That might not be such a bad thing, but I wonder how older articles with multiple photos fared through this upgrade?
Glad you liked it, Sue!
Joy, are you from around here? I'm glad this brought back fond memories. I've got more surfing stuff here on Gather, if you fell moved to look.
Glad you comment stalked me so I could stalk you back heh
This is a great article -- it keeps reactivating brains cells I feared were long dead.
LOL!!! Angela, I was wondering when one of you all was gonna start drooling over the male bodies in tight wetsuits! And I'm really glad you and Heather were able to find this.
Joy, the article may reactivate brain cells, but if you want to give the body a wake-up call, take a dip in that water. Yee-haw!
Yup, Sheryl, as you cam see from the pictures, a lot of the guys are still wearing their wetsuits, so the water is still a might chilly. Although I note Mikey out there in a t-shirt and shorts, but then he only stayed out there for about half an hour.
Arleen, you might be waterlogged, but if you were surfing there you wouldn't have any sand - that's all rocks and seaweed on that spot. You oughta see the guys picking their way in very carefully!
Tami, most definitely a telephoto lens. I don't leave home without it!
