some conversation started about dips people like with their rye bread.
A tradition in my family for most holidays was for mom to order a large round loaf of jewish rye from the local grocery store bakery.
The top would be sliced off and the center hollowed and torm into bite sized pieces.
The dip we used was called Beau Monde.
Beau Monde IS a spice found at most large grocery chains. Macormick offers it ( and it is not cheap) but it goes a long way, and after you taste it, you will probably find many uses for it.
Our family dip was simply:
a 16 oz. container of sour cream
a small red onion diced very small, almost minced
and a few heaping spoonfuls of the beau monde spice
this was mixed up and refridgerated over night
and them spooned into the rye bread before serving.
I have posted my favorite rye bread recipie before, with another of my favorite dips:

I have to say I look forward to fall now....think I will set my sights on a good marble rye....
a nice sweet pumpernickle doesnt sound to bad either!
Decisions, decisions!

Did you and Anthony put anything special in your garden this year?
And mom always made spinach dip to go with pumpernickel rye.
and it is offered by SPICE ISLAND seasonings....my bad
Anyway, I love Beau Monde but I always cringed at the price. I experimented with my own ingredients once and found that equal parts of celery salt and powdered garlic and powdered onion came pretty close to the Beau Monde flavor.
No, we haven't done much in the garden this year. Since I was away for a bit over 4 months and Anthony is not doing well, the garden is a mess and many plants died except for a few hardy perennials...and even they don't look so hot right now.
We will be working out there little by little to get it back to how it was before I left early this past March....
dont know how close it really is to the store mix....
ya know where is madame when you need her....
