Making pinecone bird feeders... A photo essay

As many of you know, we have a HUGE pile of pinecones in our yard right now, A wagon load of pinecones... A photo essay.  A few days ago we decided to make a few birdfeeders with them.  I thought the kids would make one or two each but they ended up making a total of 10!  They were having so much fun that they didn't want to stop!  Not only did the kids have a blast, but they were so easy for them to make!  I gave them each a spoon and they got busy. 

Have you ever made these before?  Here's how:  Take a pinecone and cover it with peanut butter, then roll it in bird seed.  Tie a string around the top of the pinecone and hang it.  Simple, easy, done!

Just getting started

Let's add the bird seed

WOW, look at them now

I remember making these when I was in kindergarten, then my daughter made them when she was in grade school. They are so fun to make & the birds just love them - eventhe peanut butter!

Pinecone birdfeeders, how cute! I remember doing these long ago. They're a fun activity for kids and the birds really enjoy them! Great photo essay.

Never did this as a child, but can see they would be fun and entertaining, and a good way to put birdseed in different areas of the yard. Cool photo essay.

A great project, Bridget. Not only do you get to feed your feathered friends, but identifying the differing species that visit can be an incredible learning experience for the kids.

What a cool idea! It looks like so much fun. I hate doing anything in my yard because it is so small and there seem to be flies or beetles everywhere. Plus we have no trees :(
But it looks like something we could do at Jason's dad or mom's house!!

My Momma would make Christmas Wreaths from pinecones.
She would paint them silver or gold, add Holly berries and
leaves to them with little tiny wire that would not be seen.

Some of them are really large, from 7 1/2 inches tall and 10 to 15
inches around the base.

I am going to have to try this for sure. If for no other reason but to keep the birds out of my grapes. I would really like to have some grapes,
I taught Brownies and boy Scouts too but have never see this before. A terriffic idea.
