And other essential nutrients play a key role in boosting your body's immune system By Dr. Brazos Minshew
Your immune system is the undisputed king of your body's super systems. It is so extraordinary that it defies a simple definition. One of the best explanations calls it, "The system that determines whether or not a tissue, object or organism belongs in your body and initiating a response to remove invaders." Dr. Stephen Sherwin, director of clinical research at Genentech, Inc. states: "It's an incredible system. Your immune system recognizes molecules that have never been in the body before. It can differentiate between what belongs there and what doesn't."
Most references talk about our immune system as a method of defense from a hostile environment. However, my favorite definition for the immune system comes from immunologist William Paul of the National Institutes of Health. He says: "The immune system has a phenomenal ability for dealing with information, for learning and memory, for creating and storing and using that information."
That's amazing! Our immune system interacts with our environment - both internal and external - and it harmonizes everything by creating strategies based on the ability to learn from experiences stored in its memory.
Vitamin c helps strengthen your immune response TriVita Non-Acidic Vitamin C is completely unique. Our formula has a neutral pH, so you may take an ample supply without gastric irritation, bloating and acid reflux.
There are special white blood cells that are created in the lymphatic system that protect us from viruses. They require a daily supply of Vitamin C and even more when they are fighting a virus. Vitamin C increases the number of white blood cells available to help fight infection. If you are exposed to an infection you need to increase your intake of Vitamin C. Your body cannot store Vitamin C. A single day without it leaves you with a compromised immune system and weak defenses against infection.
Echinacea: another natural defense against viruses Echinacea was the number one cold and fl u remedy in the United States until it was displaced by sulfa antibiotics. Ironically, antibiotics are not effective for colds and flu, while Echinacea offers real help. Echinacea remains the primary remedy for upper respiratory infections in Germany, where over 1.3 million prescriptions are issued each year.
The keys to success with Echinacea are to use it early and use it often. When you feel a cold or fl u coming on, take Echinacea every hour for a few days along with your other supplements. This will improve your chances of "fighting" the infection altogether. Of course, getting your rest and sleep is critical in mounting a defense against infection. Two additional supplements that help contribute to a healthy immune system are TriVita OmegaPrime and TriVita Sublingual B-12.
The dangers of inactivity
Our immune system gets stronger with exercise and movement. These activities stimulate deep breathing. The tendency among most people is to slow down as we age. That means that our breathing becomes more shallow and our immune system becomes weaker. Imagine this: Our immune system is aging, we may not be getting enough Vitamin C, we become less active and we are continually exposed to illness - that's a recipe for disaster!
Also, if you are inactive or sedentary, your cells begin to choke and suffocate because nutrients can't get in and waste can't get out. Your body must now mobilize other elements of your immune system to deal with this cesspool of potential infection. One of the ways it does this is through inflammation. Inflammation is a normal response to an abnormal condition. Inflammation opens the blood vessels wide open and floods the tissues with white blood cells. If the stress continues, the inflammation will continue. That starts a cascade of inflammation leading to infection, allergies, irritation and so on.
Eventually, an immune system under stress and deprived of the proper nutrients and nurturing will break down. Autoimmunity is an abnormal response to the problem of chronic stress, chronic inflammation and chronic infection. It happens when your immune system loses its ability to distinguish healthy tissues from diseased tissues - so it attacks them both! Autoimmune conditions include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Thyroid Disease and Type 1 Diabetes.
Reduce stress and improve nutrition Repairing your immune system can be accomplished through stress reduction and better nutrition. This becomes more important as we age. Remember, your immune system carries the information of a lifetime of exposure to viruses, bacteria and other challenges, as well as the memory of how we care for ourselves. It uses this information to prepare strategies for keeping you as healthy as possible. If you lack the proper nutrients, your immune system won't have the tools it needs to mount a successful defense against infection. The sad truth is that as your digestion declines, nutrients become harder to come by, even if you are eating a healthy diet.
The nutrients in vitamins help
strengthen your immune system As a foundation for a healthy immune system, you need a good base of nutrients. Many doctors recommend taking a multiple vitamin and mineral supplement along with Vitamin C, an antioxidant complex and an Omega-3 supplement. Because of the imbalance in your immune system caused by stress, I also recommend TriVita's Adaptogen 10 Plus. These adaptogens are especially important if you have an autoimmune condition. health is the immune system's best effort to harmonize your physical, emotional and spiritual health Spiritual health? Yes! A healthy immune system will cooperate with a healthy mind centered on true spiritual values. A Harvard Medical School conference taught us that spiritual people better endure a personal crisis because they are able to find purpose and meaning in life. And, this translates directly to physical and emotional health: the Journal of the American Geriatric Society found that those who did not nourish their spirituality through life had much higher rates of everything from anxiety to Cancer. On the other hand, those that did take time to cultivate their spiritual nature enjoyed better overall physical and emotional health
The immune system is your mind-body connection As we have seen, it is impossible to talk about the immune system without discussing nutrients and nurturing. Provide yourself with nutrients such as TriVita's Non-Acidic Vitamin C, Echinacea, OmegaPrime and Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid. You can also nurture your immune system by learning and living TriVita's 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness every day. Go to page 2 for a complete list of these essentials.
Did you know?
Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of antioxidants Children should eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, women should eat seven servings and men should eat nine servings. It's also recommended that you take an antioxidant supplement based in whole foods such as berries and herbs, which are known for their high antioxidant qualities. Combine antioxidants with a whole food-based multiple vitamin and mineral supplement to balance and support the work of the antioxidants.
