Learn how to protect yourself from the damage caused by negative emotions
"You have nothing to fear but fear itself." These famous words couldn't be truer when it comes to your health! Do you know that fear and worry can lead to health problems? Excessive worrying can lead to anything from an upset stomach and back pain to irritability and sleep trouble.
Research continues to show that happier people are healthier people. Those who worry and constantly fill their minds with negative thoughts have a higher risk of developing a variety of physical and emotional problems including:
- Depression
- Increased susceptibility to illness
- High blood pressure
- Irritability
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Stomach and intestinal problems
- Skin problems such as eczema and fever blisters
- Lower life satisfaction
There are certainly plenty of things we can worry about in life, but if we dwell on them, they will just become larger in our minds and consume our days... and our good health. Fortunately, there are a number of ways we can deal with fear and worry.
Talk it over with a friend
We have a tendency to keep things to ourselves, building them up in our minds until they seem insurmountable. Oftentimes, you'll find that just talking about it helps. This is where your friends and family come in! You don't have to carry your problems alone. When someone else carries them with you, they're so much easier to bear. You may not have solved the problem but getting it off your chest can really free you and bring things back into perspective. If you don't have a close confidant, consider a pastor or counselor.
Count on the power of prayer Prayer can be so powerful. We can give all our worries and fears to God; He's much better equipped to deal with them than we are! Take some time every day to commune with God. Prayer can give you a feeling of peace that is hard to find anywhere else.
Accentuate the positive
Focusing on the positive aspects of life can really make the worrisome aspects seem less significant. One way you can do this is by starting a gratitude journal; every day, write down one thing you're grateful for. You'll be amazed by what it reveals about the blessings in your life - and how it takes your mind off your worries.
Shift your focus
One of the best ways to take your mind off your worries is to help someone else that has a need. This could be as simple as baking a dish for a church potluck or as involved as organizing a fund raiser for your local charity. Not only will you be making a difference, you will no longer be focusing on your worries.
Put fear and worry in their place
Your health is too precious to be wasted on worry and fear. Make the decision today to accept the things you cannot change... but also accept that you can change how you deal with them. This will help you put things in perspective so you can start living again!
