I am new to Gather.com. But then so many of you are new too. So I was fascinated when I read a comment about the Obama logo having Islamic overtones:
| ||
NOW that was really interesting. So I did something. I pulled up the Islamic Star and Crescent as I am not real familiar with it.

And then I took a look at the Obama logo. Maybe it did have some relationship to the Star and Crescent. If so, I thought it wasn't going to represent good judgment on the Obama campaign.
Doing a little Google search, I realized that this line of thinking was part and parcel of the Wingnuts on the right as this blog post suggests, or this post:
"The two most widely recognized symbols of Islam are the crescent and the sword. Kind of amusing that Barack Hussein Obama's campaign logo can be seen to feature both a crescent and a curved Islamic scimitar:
The crescent shape in Obama's logo has the round part on top, just like a traditional crescent shaped mihrab (the Mecca direction indicator around which every mosque is built)."
I tried real hard to see what all of thes people were suggesting.
Don H. illustrates this strained effort at linking the Obama Logo with the Islamic symbol:
I sort of could s
ee how that "C" sort of represented that blue half-circle....but it was really a stretch.
There really wasn't much there to recall to me the Islamic star and crescent. Seemed more like a flag lapel pin than anything.
But I figured I really HAD seen a "C" with a "five-pointed star" somewhere before.
And then it struck me.
It was the McCain LOGO!......hahahahhahahahah
I couldn't help it.
Too funny.
All those Republicans seeing an Islamic Star and Crescent and there was their own candidate with the Star and Crescent staring out at me.
Had to post it and share with all of my friends.
And NO I don't think McCain is secre
tly Moslem.
But you got to admit this whole line of discussion is pretty funny!
Maybe we can have this campaign on Gather.com revolve more around policy and the direction the nation is heading. But if you really prefer to take it into the gutter......

Thanks for a refreshing look at one of the sillier accusations being leveled in what promises to be a massively silly election.
You need a logo because otherwise all those graphic design students who have massive student loans would be out there on the streets asking "Brother, can you spare $400 for a new Wacom tablet?"
Absolutely well said. This is the crux of the "debate" we see so often here on Gather. People come to the table with their predetermined views of the candidates (and of the world). They choose their "facts" (many of which are fabricated by their like-thinking cohorts) that support their biases. Too often we choose to be blind because it is comforting to validate our beliefs.
The point, of course, is that we need to think. Both candidates have positives and negatives. Both have positions with which we agree and disagree. Rather than choose to see only the positions or factors that support our views we need to work toward identifying goals toward which we can work.
