Vitamin B-12 helps improve heart elasticity and may reduce symptoms
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a very serious condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood through the body. This causes blood to back up in the veins and also creates pools of fluid in the liver and lungs. Common in people over age 65, CHF also tends to strike African-Americans and people who are overweight or obese.
One of the first signs of Congestive Heart Failure is swelling in the feet, ankles and legs. This swelling eventually spreads throughout the body as the kidneys begin to retain fluid. Other symptoms of CHF can include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and frequent urination, especially at night. Over time, untreated CHF will affect virtually every organ in the body.
How serious is Congestive Heart Failure? Currently, more than five million North Americans live with CHF and 500,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. It accounts for approximately 260,000 deaths per year.
What causes Congestive Heart Failure?
Some of the reasons include:
- Problems with the heart's valves
- High blood pressure or heart muscle damage after a heart attack
- Coronary artery disease
- Cardiomyopathy (weakened heart muscle) due to infection, excess alcohol intake or genetic defect
While some doctors may prescribe diuretics, digitalis or other medications for Congestive Heart Failure, Vitamin B-12 has been shown to be another effective way to lessen CHF symptoms. CHF causes a loss of elasticity in the heart when it pumps which in turn triggers fluid retention. Vitamin B-12 helps create taurine, an amino acid which studies suggest may be useful in treating Congestive Heart Failure symptoms.
Study participants showed significant improvement in their ability to breathe with a reduction in heart palpitations and fluid buildup. Heart x-rays showed improvement with taurine and the patients experienced an overall reduction in heart failure severity. There is also evidence that B-12 and taurine may be helpful for numerous other conditions, including Diabetes, Hypertension, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, cataracts and Strokes.
Here's what else you can do to help protect against Congestive Heart Failure or to hinder the condition:
- If you smoke, quit
- Avoid alcohol
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Lose weight, if necessary
- Eat a healthy diet that is low in saturated fat and salt, and rich in whole grains
- Begin a safe exercise program with the advice of your health care provider.
It's important to know that Congestive Heart
Failure is a condition that is too serious for self treatment.
Always consult with your health care provider before using Vitamin B-12 or any other treatment for Congestive Heart Failure.
