The dumbest attack on John McCain yet

July 20, 2008 06:49 PM EDT
There is a story out there, probably false, that John McCain has no computer skills and the article asks, "Shouldn't the President of the United States know how to use a computer?"

Presidents  don't even have to know how to drive a car.  When do you think was the last time Bill Clinton or either George Bush drove a car?  They have drivers to take them where they want to go and they have people to compose their e-mails.

But the best part of this attack is that John McCain was a fighter pilot in combat.  Those are about the best techno skills I can name.  If you can fly a fighter jet at hundreds of miles an hour, learning a software package is easy.

I learned a long time ago that one of the best-kept secrets of being a good leader is only knowing what you need to know. Anything more just clogs up your thinking, and might even make you second-guess yourself. It also wastes your time. A leader is a puppeteer -- using others to do the work, while controlling the show.

I doubt very much that Obama could build a computer from scratch either, by the way.

John,
I'm reasonably certain Obama can't fly a jet either. Maybe a ballon would be more Obama's style since he IS full of hot air.

God bless John McCain for learning, but why just now? We need a president that has a basic understanding of computers him or herself for many reasons. Having people in place or near you is nothing like understanding the basic concepts yourself, so that you can ask the key questions, everything cannot be simply delegated.

The war on terrorism will also be fought in cyber space not only on a battlefield with bullets and bombs and a well planned terrorist's attack on our critical computer systems such as banking, medical or transportation can hurt America as bad as any terrorist bomb, can cost hundreds of thousands of lives and billions of dollars depending on the attack. Government and health care websites have already proved venerable to cyber attacks, if they are not critical, then what is?

"Government, Health Care Web Sites Attacked"
Government Computer News (07/16/08) ; Jackson, William

Over the last several weeks, more than 1,000 Web sites have been compromised by hackers using a tool known as Asprox, according to a recent scan of Web servers by the Internet security firm Finjan. Although hackers' use of the tool--which utilizes a well-established SQL-injection attack to compromise sites with a .asp file extension--is not groundbreaking, their choice of targets is, says Finjan CTO Yuval Ben-Itzhak. Finjan's scan found that high percentages of the compromised sites belonged to government agencies and health care organizations. Of the sites that had been compromised by the attack, 13 percent belonged to governments, while 12 percent belonged to health care organizations. Ben-Itzhak says he is not sure why hackers were targeting government Web sites, though he theorizes that hackers were targeting sites belonging to health care organizations because health care data is increasingly more valuable than credit card data. In order to protect this information from the attack, enterprises should use application firewalls in front of their servers, Ben-Itzhak says.

So the president who ever they are is best to understand computers along with botnets, Trojan horses, back doors, logic bombs, worms and viruses etc.

Then you couldn't possibly be voting for McCain.

Of course, if you think GWB has done a good job, you'll get even more of it if McCain wins.

Brain, we aren't hiring an executive secretarty.
But thanks for your opinion. I love dueling with you.
And you fuel my imagiantion and soemtimes my anger.

Eric, thanks for the link. I would have thought the man who fought so hard to keep the rest of Congress from taxing our Internet would be more savvy with it, but, hey, if he can learn to fly a fighter plane, he can learn anything.

Both Obama and McCain have called for increased national computer security, but in my opinion Obama is pushing the issue most because he really seems to understand the importance of it better. McCain is willing to spend more money on national computer security, but Obama wants a czar that will report directly to him. Obama understands tech.

We aren't hiring an executive secretary but having someone in the oval office that doesn't understand the basics of cyber security and America's vulnerability will allow terrorists to bring America to it's knees without firing a shot. A person that can help defend against computer attacks isn't exactly a secretary. Normally they make six figures a year or better in the private sector- not bad for secretarial work. And are titled Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Chief Information Security Officer- CISO.

I don't think you have to know how to personally use a computer to understand the crucial role that they play and the need for security. After all, I don't need to be able to do auto repairs in order to understand the need for routine maintenance. There are people whose job it is to keep our cars in working condition and do the needed repairs.

They grasp at anything during election years. It doesn't take long to learn to use a computer. I took college classes in computer before there was an internet, then I didn't use one for years. I went back to take a class in Excel and was totally lost! There were Windows, and a Mouse, and a Cursor! Oh My!!
It didn't take but a couple hours for a classmate to bring me up to date.

He doesn't have to build a computer -- but the president needs to have a appreciation of the technology the world uses for communication and research. McCain admitted his lack of same for computers.

This is something he could remedy ... the question is, would he?

McCain doesn't need to be a computer wizard, any more than Obama needs to be a (shot down) fighter pilot, to be President. But this is the 21st Century. Saying McC doesn't need basic computer skills to be the top executive in the US gov't because he has 'people to do that for him' is like saying a President doesn't need to be literate or be able to balance a checkbook because he has people to do that for him. (We already elected that guy twice and look how well that turned out.)

I'm glad I read this. I had been wavering, but I will not be voting for McCain. He really is a dinosaur. A good man I think, but not Presidential timber if he's just now learning to Google.

He crashed 5 Navy planes, and "passed" second from the bottom of his class at the Naval academy. He probably doesn't know how to handle a computer because he's too dumb, not because he's just too old and doesn't want to learn new tricks. Frankly, anyone who can't handle a computer in this day and age is a threat to national security in a position of power, such as the white house.

What was john mccain's class ranking in college?

Perhaps the point of the article you saw was that if he can't learn to understand and use a computer, what else can't he understand? It's a simple thing to learn and we do expect our president to be of a certain intelligence. That's one thing that Mr. Bush really got hit on and why he lost a lot of respect.

However! There are so many issues that need discussing that, on face value, it seems like a silly thing to get riled up over.

Brian, just getting IN to the Naval Academy is something most of us here couldn't accomplish. Anyway, it is obvious to reasonable people that experience and knowledge of the facts TODAY is more important than grades in post-secondary education.

Clark, thanks for your comprehensive analysis of how Reagan could have predicted what al-Qaeda would grow into. Like always, 100% facts, 0% character assassination from you.

The Contras were self admitted terrorist group but that did not stop Reagan from openly calling himself one of them. Of course, this did not stop him from selling drugs to fund terrorism nor did it stop him from creating al-qaeda.

BTW, up to this time, no Republican in history (with the exception of Nixon) was more criticized by his own party members than was McCain. How do you explain that he is now the party's darling??

Agreed. It's a dumb attack. Except:

1) It's not an attack. It's simply John McCain admitting he doesn't have computer skills.

2) The fact that a US Senator doesn't know how to use a computer supports the idea that his thinking is still in the past. It's not because he's old or because "he has people to do that for him." Frankly, most of the people his age that I know are at least familiar with computers if not adept. It shows a lack of initiative.

As for the suggestion that somehow his fighter pilot training of 40 years ago makes it easier to learn a software package is totally nonsensical. Not only is it a non sequitur, but if it's so easy why hasn't he already learned it.

McCain doesn't have computer skills. You know the things every 4th grader in America has.

Before dismissing this as "probably false" why don't you do something like Google it?

Here is one story: http://www.ktka.com/news/2008/jun/26/computer_challenged_candidate_takes_heat/

"We don't expect the president to be the Liberace of the keyboard, but still should the next President of the United States know how to work a computer?

CNN's Jeanee Moos set off to answer that question.

"I guess so. It would be helpful. Why not?," one elementary student said.

Ask McCain, and here's how he describes his computer skills.

"I am an illiterate that has to rely on my wife for all the assistance that I can get," McCain said."

No, he probably can do just fine without computer skills. But don't you think a candidate who is trying to prove that he is up to leading the nation in the 21st century should have those skills?

Otherwise, it just works to support the problem of his advanced age.

How can a person be president without the most basic of skills?

Oh, I forgot, the Supreme Dorks can appoint you prez if you're Shrubbie.

Sandra Day O'Connor needed to get home to hubby before he lost his memory and got himself a girlfriend, so she helped appoint That tool (who's family did business with the Bin Laden's.)

I am not prepared to elect a man to be the oldest President in history who has chosen NOT to keep himself up-to-date by doing the most basic of things. Getting himself a computer, learning what it means to go "online", and check his email.

John McCain is an aging warrior. A man who his past his prime and is suffering from bouts of severe temper sugging PTSD, and MELANOMA. Does anyone want to talk about electing an old man to President who has a high likelihood of putting this nation through the challenge of dealing with infirmity?

He is a no-go from the get-go.

I know a lot of really good people who don’t use and don’t want to use computers. They are relatively young (if you want to call someone in his early 40’s young) and relatively old. I also know a lot of really good people who use computers. They are also young and old. So what? If McCain would rather be spending his time listening to NPR than surfing the web more power to him.

What worries me most about McCain is that it appears that he has lived an extremely sheltered life. Like Ronald Reagan and W Bush, I don't think these people even have a clue as to the hardships of everyday life. Their lives are a piece of cake, have been for years, and they do not and can not appreciate the diffuculties of the other 90% of citizens of the USA.

LET THEM EAT CAKE!

~~ We have to unite the Republican Party if we are to defeat the socialist movement anew ~~

If the Republicans hadn't financed the Red Army in 1922 there would never have been a Soviet Union. So don't worry --- that is not likely to happen again.

I'm not voting for McCain, but I don't think having no computer skills to speak of should be an automatic disqualification. Though it would save taxpayer money not to have to hire a person to read the President his email...

Seriously, though, why not just send the guy to a library computer class and settle the matter?

I've been watching the posts, and your responses Mary Ann. Both of us mentioned that McCain could remedy this easily. To get it behind him (and let the country focus on the issues), have him take a basic computer course or two and use it as a photo op. It would show flexibility, interest in new things, and his ability to still learn (which every president should be required to demonstrate IMHO).

Mud slinging I can do without. It is petty and I ignore it. I vote for a person with morals and standards, not easy figuring that out. Whoever ends up as our President will get the upmost respect from me. I never liked Clinton (he was IMO an embarrassment to this country) but nobody ever heard me say anything negative about him until he left office.

luckky, we have to support McCain no matter how difficult it is. Like when a husband does something his wife hates but she supports him because they are united. We have to unite the Republican Party if we are to defeat the socialist movement anew.
TJ "Acquit McCarthy!" Thompson , Jul 23, 2008, 4:31pm EDT

TJ, since there is over a 60% divorce rate in this country, obviously that support no matter what isn't happening in today's marriages. Since you yourself hve admitted that you have very little real "experience" with women, I do not think that you should be painting yourself as an expert on this subject.

Let's see what happens after you get married (that is soon isn't it?) and your wife finds out the things about you that can only come with living with a person, do you really think that she will always support you right or wrong? Plus when she finds out that your relative inexperience in fact total lack of experience that makes you one of the rare adults out there that have ever had any experience in one particular area may not be what she needs to you think that she will continue to support you and stand by your side?

Plus don't you think the mentality of "wife must stand by husband whether she thinks he is right or wrong" is rally a bad old testament bible dude and not a true reflection of the strong, independent, intelligent women that make up the majority of American Women today? Or did you actually find one of the very few subservient mice that are still out there in this country? I don't know about you but I happen to like the ones that have strength, independence and intelligence because I know that if they love and respect me it is because that see someone that they know respects them in return. In fat I am engeged to one of the strongest examples of that intelligence, beauty and strength that have ever met. In fact maybe the strongest! We may not alway agree and we have differences that we need to work through but the day that I expect her to say "I support you and will stand behind you even though I and the rest of the world know you are totally wrong" is the day that I will start to lose the enormous respect that I have for her.

Not only are your politics lost in the dark ages dude, so are your views on women and what makes them the beautiful creatures they are!

now on the subject at hand, although I think that McCain not being computer savvy isnot the biggest deal in whether he is qualified to run this country or not, I do think the fact that it is an indicator of how far he is behind the times on this and many other issues is the strongest reason why he shouldn't be our next president. We need to moveforward, not backwards. McCain represents the past and Obama represents the future. I'll take the future every time.

McCain is the one who said he was computer illiterate--that his wife answers his email or something like that. Maryan, before you start ranting about people who are stupid and computer illiterate, maybe you should check sources? Oh....wait a minute...that doesn't bode well with Grumpy McSame crowd, they might actually find out the truth.

John McCain can't use a computer or use email. He's admitted it. As for his flying skills, he's crashed something like 5 planes. Those who say those crashes weren't his fault, you can say that the man has VERY BAD LUCK with planes.

Being able to pick up new skills is indicative of a dynamic mind. The fact that he can't demonstrate the ability to use a computer or email says something. My grandparents can't use computers either. I still love them, but I have to remind them I already graduated from college when they lecture me on the importance of going to it.

If you can fly a fighter jet at hundreds of miles an hour, learning a software package is easy.
Except he wasn't all that good of a pilot. Of the five planes he lost, only one was due to enemy fire.

Also, that was 30 years ago. People were still thinking that 8-tracks were the greatest thing in music then. Technology has changed. The point is that people in all types of industries need to keep up with the latest technology. Only just now learning how to use e-mail is a sign of someone who doesn't really think much of improving himself intellectually.

His war injuries prevent him from typing on a keyboard like most people can. This attack is starting to go beyond his computer skills, to mocking his war injuries.

This is a bit of a strange attack.

I would hope that even if he didn't know how to operate a computer, that he would at least try to learn. Attempting to learn something is evidence that he has the intellectual curiosity that has been sorely lacking in the White House for the past eight years.

As I first suggested two years ago, Barack Obama will become the 44th President of the United States and I am ecstatic. It's time, it's my time, it's our time. Not to delve too deep philosophically here, but heed my words: "I cannot carry the world on my shoulders, but on my shoulders, it is my world that must carry me."
