So I always in the past have purchased Wal-Mart brand paint and have always had to apply 2 coats.  After the 2 coats it looked good and all was well.

Two days ago I purchased paint at Lowe's for $28 a can. It's called Valspar Premium paint.  It says you only need one coat.  It does have a lifetime warranty whatever that means.   The walls were originally cream and I was just going to paint over it cream again to freshen it up.   After TWO coats it looks like crap.  You can still see dark parts through it.  It just looks so bad.  I am going to try to return it and go back to the crappy old Wal-Mart paint that works just fine!!

Pretty much any brand of paint I've ever used never was good enough for 1 coat of paint - even the most exspensive paint. Home Depot's Behr paint is a really good high quality paint and it's still somewhat inexspensive. But, again 1 coat of paint always has looked like garbage to me. 2 coats is the way to go. :)

Whenever my family gets paint from lowes, we go with Olympic Premium. It's really good.

I agree with Chuck. We have bought some really pricey one coat paint, and it never works. I'm sorry you had to be stressed out over it, painting is such a chore anyway.

I agree with Chuck, Behr is really good paint. And HD runs specials on it pretty often where you get $5 off (rebate).

I never listen to ads. They always show some gal dressed in really nice clothes painting. Bull! There are only five basic ingredients that go into every can of paint. The percentage of each ingredient is determined by the use of that paint. Interior, exterior, high hide, gloss, semi-gloss, flat, etc, etc. all come from those five basic things. Painting is a matter of finding the brand that works best for you and then sticking with it. Sherwin Williams, for example, is not a brand I like but there are pro painters that swear by it. Out in the Pacific Northwest, we have Miller paint. I really like it where others don't. Go figure.

something may be wrong with that paticular paint,hon. it should have covered with one coat. I was married to a fantastic painter for years and he did teach me to go with mid-grade when buying....

Greetings - I always use Behr's ultra white FLAT or another inexpensive flat white paint as a cover-up before I use an expensive paint. I find that it smooths the surface and the nice colors on top of it look much better and richer with only one coat...however, typically, no matter what grade paint - if I'm painting a light color, I always double coat it - Salud.

Gee... I thought Behr's WAS expensive! I put 3 coats on my kitchen cabinets, though, and it nicked right away... (A lot of that has to do with the kitty-cat who likes to stand up on his hind legs and reach up to see if he can reach the cutting board when I'm slicing roast for "tacos de carne asada", though...)

I've used Baer or Behr, or whatever it is with great success in the past. I did go to semi-gloss or satin(?) though, and it covered very good for me in one coat; as well as easy to use. I was hesitant to go away from flat paint at first, but now I really like it better. It also cleans very well too, without any paint coming off. It isn't exactly cheap though, but I think it worth to me.

That is rough. I have never done a painting project on my own, so I can't really make much of a suggestion Danielle. I hope you all get it worked out right without having to spend too much more.

Weird, huh. I always use John Hancock...works fine. For political/social reasons, I won't step inside a Walmart store. I believe in supporting local business people even if their prices are higher. I just buy less.

I vote for defective paint. Two coats should have done it, especially since you were not changing colors.

I have always used killz under any paint I use. Than I only have to add one coat of paint. Thats how I did my daughter and sons room. All I have to do is touch ups when done. No second coat needed. Plus the killz stops the darker colors from bleeding through when you want to apply a lighter color.

You probably know there is good, better & best paint. AKA, the amount of color pigment...
I've never seen a paint that covers in only one coat. Seriously, that one coat coverage is a joke.. Good luck ! Painting CAN be fun! Put on good music to get you going!

I painted my bathroom recently. I went to the local hardware store, not a chain, and got a gallon of Valspar. I had to do a second coat only because the wall had a print on it and the paint wasn't dark enough to cover the dark spots. It covered great where there wasn't any spots. Plus, neighborhood hardware stores will give you extra attention, meaning proper pigment amounts and good mixing.

I go to Home Depo and buy Behr paints. One coat also, but they went on beautifully.
