A Night in Waikiki
This little piece is written in response to the Friday Writing Essentials writing prompt, 'Memories of Eating Out." I have few better memories than of this night...and have tried to capture its magic here.
Torches flare.
Lazily lapping aquamarine waves
Glow purple now,
As the sun dips behind Diamond Head.
Handsome, shirtless, barefoot men,
Wearing skirts made of long palm leaves,
Make swishy sounds as they make their way across the sand
With food -laden trays,
So big they must balance them
On broad brown shoulders.
All the while we sit, so pampered,
At teak tables,
Right there on the beach.
Sink our toes in the sand
And twirl our hair,
Wondering how we will ever breathe quite as happy again,
But here.
Smiles so broad all around.
Plates of pork and poi,
Blue drinks, laced with spicy rum,
Dressed to the nines
With flowers that you can eat!
I pluck the plumeria blossom
Balanced there, on the rim of my glass,
A ballerina resting.
Inhale it's heady perfume
Then place it over my right ear,
As I smile at the
Men in skirts.
Sip a long, cool blue sip.
Inhale.
Plumeria sweetens the air,
All around.
